PhD positions, ecological modelling, Goettingen, Germany

SCIENCE-JOBS-DE Stellenausschreibung (vacancies)
----------------------------------------------------------

"Integrated modelling of land-use changes at rainforest margins in Indonesia"

Starting date
As soon as possible.

Rationale
The project will investigate the ecological and socio-economic trade-offs at the rainforest margin under land-use change. Previous insights (e.g., Steffan-Dewenter et al. 2007 ) will be extended using dynamic modelling techniques. Based on a large and long-term data set, ecological and socio-economic model components will be developed from scratch that simulate the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use (rainforest, agriculture) and individual households. Combined model analyses will investigate trade-offs in biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and household income.

One position will focus on the development and analysis of ecological models (grid-based and agent based models) while the other will focus on economic modelling (microeconometric models, calibrated agricultural household models). Either position can be filled by a postdoc or a PhD, depending on experience and integrative abilities. The postdoc will be responsible for the integration of ecological and economic model components.

Requirements
Successful applicants hold a master degree in Ecological Sciences, Plant Sciences, Economic Sciences, Applied Mathematics or a related field, with sound experience in simulation modelling and with the work in interdisciplinary teams. The project will be based in Göttingen, Germany, but will involve travelling to Indonesia.

Salary and conditions
The positions will be awarded for at least 18 months, with a possible extension of up to three years. The salary is in accordance with the German state regulated public service salary scale (PhD: 65 % E 13 TV-L, Postdoc: 100% E 13 TV-L). The University of Göttingen actively seeks to foster career opportunities for female scholars and therefore strongly encourages qualified women to apply. Candidates with disabilities who are equally qualified for the position will receive special consideration.

Applications
Applicants should send an application letter, their CV, and the names (with email address) of two referees before September 19, 2010 in a single pdf-file to kwiegan1*uni-goettingen.de. The CV should contain a list of publications and information on the level of experience in the following areas:
-- ecological modelling / developing, programming, and analyzing simulation models
-- advanced statistics and mathematics
-- tropical ecology
-- biodiversity and ecosystem functioning
-- poverty and distributional analyses, microeconometrics
-- modelling agricultural households

PhD Studentships in Economics - UNiversity of Otago New Zealand

PhD Studentships

Economics

University of Otago

The Department of Economics of the University of Otago in New Zealand is expanding its PhD programme and invites applications for Ph.D. Studentships (Scholarships). Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit. Please note that in order to be considered for a scholarship, the absolute minimum required is an "A-" grade average, aside from other academic achievements. The University of Otago is New Zealand's leading research university. In the most recent national research evaluation exercise (PBRF) - equivalent to the British RAE and the Australian ERA - Otago was ranked first in Economics and first overall. For more information on the PhD programme, please consult the Department's website at http://www.business.otago.ac.nz/econ/

Applications are considered throughout the year.

Each Scholarship will pay university tuition fees and in addition a living allowance of NZ $20,000 per annum for up to three years, for a total of NZ $60.000. Additional income from research assistance and/or tutoring may be available.

Information on the relative cost of living in New Zealand is available at http://www.immigration.govt.nz/nzopportunities/lifestyle/costofliving/default.htm

The normal period of study is three years. Applicants should have completed at least four years of university study in Economics, and hold an Honours or Masters degree, with excellent grades, which includes a research component. The PhD programme at Otago is by research only, that is, it does not include any course work. We expect that you will have taken courses equivalent to our own honours programme, which includes advanced courses in micro- and macroeconomic theory and in econometrics. The fact that the Otago PhD does not include course work means that you need to have obtained the skills (either theoretical, empirical or both) required for your proposed research before coming to Otago. In addition, it is assumed that you have good written English skills.

If you would like feedback on whether you may qualify for a scholarship, please email a CV, copies of your academic transcripts, showing the courses you have taken and the grades you obtained, plus a 2 to 3 page research proposal, that clearly sets out the hypothesis you wish to test, the methodology you will use to test the hypothesis, and how your research will extend the existing literature to:

Postdoctoral Position In Plant Electrophysiology

Starting date: immediately or upon agreement

Work place: University of Lausanne , Department of Plant Molecular Biology and

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology

Profile wanted:

Applicants must have a doctorate in a related field, extensive experience in

electrophysiology (animal or plant), and an interest in plant physiology

Description of research topic and environment:

A postdoctoral position is available for research on the roles of electrical signalling in

the wound response in the plant model Arabidopsis. The work involves collaboration

between the dedicated electrophysiology laboratory

of Stephan Kellenberger (http://www.unil.ch/dpt/page61353_en.html)

and a laboratory studying the molecular genetics of the wound response in Arabidopsis

(Edward Farmer; http://www.unil.ch/dbmv/page8006_en.html). The Farmer laboratory

has recently found fast biochemical responses to wounding that may be initiated by ion

fluxes (J. Biol. Chem. 284, 34506). In addition a gain-of-function ion channel mutant

identified in the laboratory mimics the wound response (Plant J. 49, 889). We seek

someone to conduct electrophysiology experiments on intact plants (primarily

intracellular recordings). One aim of the project is to test whether electrical activity is

critical in the wound response. This multidisciplinary project is situated in the vibrant

Lausanne biomedical research community. Lausanne and nearby Geneva offer a superb

lakeside environment.

Application:

Applications, including the names of three referees should be addressed by email to

Stephan Kellenberger, Département de Pharmacologie et de Toxicologie, UNIL, Rue

du Bugnon 27, CH-1005 Lausanne, Stephan.Kellenberger@unil.ch or to Edward

Farmer, Département de biologie moléculaire végétale, UNIL, Bâtiment Biophore,

1015 Lausanne , edward.farmer@unil.ch. A publication record in electrophysiology is

essential and we will only reply to applicants with such publications.
