Applications are invited for a Ph.D. position available at the geophysics department of the Institute of Geosciences, University of Potsdam, Germany (head: Prof. Dr. F. Scherbaum,

The position is to be filled within the project RAPID (project titel: "Rapid Automated Determination of Seismic Source Parameters"), which has been funded by the BMBF within the Geotechnologien program "Early Warning".
Duration: until 30.09.2010
Start: as soon as possible
Salary: TV-L E 13-Ost / 2
Task: The candidate is expected to conduct research within and to contribute to the work package "Evaluation and classification of near-real time source parameter estimates for tsunami hazard".
She/he shall conduct research in the field of machine learning applied to geophysical data sets. The aim of her/his work is to design an automatic alert level system for the near real-time
evaluation of the tsunami generation potential for earthquakes. The system shall be based on the earliest available seismological information, i.e. rapid source parameter estimates provided by
novel near real-time operating seismological analysis techniques.
Particular challenging within this project is the necessity to account for the uncertainty of estimates as well as the imprecise knowledge about the physical processes involved in Tsunami generation.
Requirements: Diploma or Master in Geophysics / Physics / Applied Mathematics or Computer Science; interest in practical problem solving / geoscientific problems / machine learning /
intelligent data analysis. Practical skills in software development in Linux environment (C, C++, scripting languages) is a plus.
