PhD in the field of risk management for the built heritage, ETH Zurich

PhD student (100%) in the field of risk management for the built heritage

One position for a PhD student is offered in connection with an exciting and challenging collaborative research project between the group of "Risk and Safety" at the Institute of Structural Engineering and the Institute of Historic Building Research and Conservation at ETH Zurich. The position can occupied immediately but can also be held open until the end of the year for the right candidate.

Project description:
The project addresses the various problem spheres related to the decision making concerning preservation of cultural heritage in Switzerland. Cultural heritage comprises the entire built infrastructure and also the knowledge of its preservation and management. The project aims to provide an inventory of spatial-chronological risks that includes a description of the estimated scale of the risks, as well as the probability of their occurrence and curtailment in the short-, mid- and long-term. The approach will be interdisciplinary and will profit from the synergies of the specialty areas engaged and will place the tradition of the cultural heritage within the framework of an analysis of stability and developmental dynamics of the entire system.

Preferably the applicant has some background and strong interests in he area of statistics and probability theory. A good foundation in structural engineering and capabilities in programming will also be an advantage but not an absolute requirement. The applicant should have a basic education preferably in the field of civil engineering or architecture at the level of a MSc degree.

The new research assistant will be required to collaborate closely with researchers from two different but related disciplines namely structural engineering and architecture. It is thus of significant importance that the candidate has a strong interest and capability in collaborative research and good communication skills.
