Job opportunity at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine

Ph.D. student in combining gravity and ocean data in inverse ocean models
(Entg.Gr. 13/2 TVöD)
Satellite-based gravity observations in combination with sea surface
height measurements from
satellite altimetry can provide valuable information for estimates of
the ocean circulation. Traditionally
this information is available in a form that is difficult to interpret
in the context of ocean models.
Recently, new earth gravity models have been developed at the
Institute for Geodesy and
Geoinformation of the Bonn University that resolve this issue.
With the German Research Foundation (DFG) priority programme 1257
"Mass transport and mass
distribution in the system Earth" (http://www.massentransporte.de,
project RIFUGIO), these new
gravity field models will be combined with oceanic observations and
ocean models. One of the goals is
to investigate in process studies, how consistent information from
gravity field modelling is with current
ocean models, and how the new gravity models can contribute to
understanding the ocean circulation.
In close cooperations with members of the partner project at Bonn
University, these insights will be
used to find new estimates of the ocean circulation.
Tasks: Simulations with simple and complex inverse models of the ocean
circulation in close
collaboration with members of the partner project at Bonn University;
preparation and analysis of
observational data.
Requirements: Degree in oceanography, meteorology or physics (or
comparable fields with a sound
physical/mathematic education). A strong background in hydrodynamics,
oceanography and
mathematics is essential; strong interest in numerical studies;
experience with programming
languages (Fortran) and with large computer architectures;
sufficiently good oral and written English.
The position is limited to three years.
