PhD at GeoSIM - GFZ Potsdam

Original information

Please take a closer look at the research areas
http://www.geo-x.net/geosim/about/research-areas.html

The  Helmholtz  graduate research school GeoSim (Explorative Simulation in Earth-Sciences) is a collaborative effort of researchers in departments of Earth and Mathematical Sciences at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ Potsdam), Potsdam University and FU Berlin. Currently, 23 PhD students from 9 countries and 3 continents are enrolled. We invite applications for an additional 10 PhD fellowships in the field of simulation of Earth System processes.
GeoSim researchers use numerical and physical  simulation as an explorative tool  for advancing our qualitative and quantitative understanding of Earth’s complex systems in the fields of hydrological flow and transport processes, solid earth dynamics and earthquakes,  and  atmosphere-hydrosphere dynamics and climate. Methods include data exploration and assimilation, analysis of scaling properties of geo-processes,computer-aided modelling of incompletely known systems. We aim to train a new generation of young, interdisciplinary scientists with skills in combining applied geosciences with the development of physical concepts of Earth systems, mathematical abstraction, and the use of high-performance computing.

What we offer
Training will include advanced courses in the above subjects, summer schools, and workshops complementing the research work in the topic of the PhD thesis. Candidates will be co-supervised by an earth scientist and a mathematician and will  benefit from a stimulating interdisciplinary research
environment. The three-year PhD fellowships amount 1500 euro/month (tax free).

What we ask
We expect candidates to contribute to the development of their own research topic and to participate in the school’s curriculum. At the time of appointment, candidates should have a MSc degree (or equivalent) in at least one of the following fields as well as a strong affinity with a complementary discipline: Earth Sciences (solid earth science, hydrology, atmospheric science, meteorology, climatology),  Mathematics,  Physics, Chemistry and Software Engineering.
The website  http://www.geo-x.net/geosim provides more  information  on  candidate requirements and the online application procedure, on the groups and scientists involved in GeoSim, potential thesis subjects and the PhD curriculum.
Candidate evaluation will begin after the application deadline on October 20th, 2012; the anticipated start of the PhD projects is on April 1st, 2013.  GFZ, Potsdam University and Freie Universität Berlin are equal opportunity / affirmative action employers.

Development of spatio-temporal methodology and geographical information systems (GIS) in health and environment: towards small area health statistics

Doctoral scholarship : Development of spatio-temporal methodology and geographical information systems (GIS) in health and environment: towards small area health statistics in Belgium.

Master in (bio)medical Sciences, bio-engineering, biology (specialisation Statistics)

Master in bio-statistics

Description of the PhD-project

The Scientific Institute of Public Health offers a PhD-project.

You are responsible for the organisation, execution and reporting of the research project ‘Development of spatio-temporal methodology and geographical information systems (GIS) in health and environment: towards small area health statistics in Belgium’. The result of your research will contribute to a PhD.

You will be part of the unit ‘Health and Environment’ and will be supported by senior scientists of this unit.

Project description: authorities, and scientists supporting policy, are increasingly faced to questions from the population that is concerned about the health effects, in particular cancer, of living around source(s) of potential pollution (e.g. a nuclear site, a landfill site, a specific company,... ) Despite the efforts, most of the time, few relevant answers can be given by the classical surveillance systems. Environmental health surveillance takes place by a structural approach linking environmental exposure with potential health effects and it requires advanced epidemiological and statistical techniques. Development of new methodologies in spatial-temporal analysis at small area level is ongoing at international level. At Belgian level, however, capacity building and contribution to further development of these methodologies are lacking.

This PhD project aims at the development of a broad framework for small area epidemiology, that could be used as an instrument to see what capacities and competences are available versus what should be developed further.

The research objectives are: 1) to investigate, at small area level, whether there is an increased health risk of living in the vicinity of nuclear sites in Belgium, i.e. thyroid cancer and childhood leukaemia in children aged 0-14 years; 2) to study the practical/implementation requirements to enable such studies in the future (policy preparing component); and 3) to elaborate a framework for the statistical aspects of small area health statistics (methodological aspects)

The results of this doctoral research project are the generation of knowledge (in the form of scientific publications) related to the research lines and programs developed; meet the operational expectations of the institutional partners involved in the project; obtaining a Ph.D.

This PhD research has the following partners: I-BioStat of the UHasselt and KULeuven, Department of Sociology of the VUB, Department of Statistics and biostatistics of the University of Washington (Seattle), Belgian Cancer Registry. The research will be performed in the Unit ‘Health and Environment’ of the WIV-ISP and at location of these partner organisations.

Profile

  • Master in (bio)medical Sciences, bio-engineering, biology (specialisation Statistics)/ Master in bio-statistics, or equivalent
  • Max. 1 year of professional research experience
  • Committed to preparing a thesis dissertation

Technical competences:

  • Advanced knowledge of bio-statistics, including computing skills (R, SAS,…)
  • Strong interest in epidemiological methodology
  • Able to speak and understand fluently at least one of both national languages (Dutch or French)

GFZ Potsdam

GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the prestige national research center for Earth Sciences in Germany and member of the Helmhotlz Association. We investigate “System Earth“ at locations all over the world with all the geological, geodetic, geophysical, geochemical and biological processes which occur at its surface and in its interior.

The goal of our interdisciplinary research is to understand these processes on all scales of time and space, whether they occur at the level of atoms and molecules or galaxies, and independently of whether they take place faster than the blink of an eye in nanoseconds or if they happen infinitely slowly over billions of years. We not only investigate the processes within the planet itself, but also study the multitude of interactions between solid earth, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the inhabited world. We also analyze how man, living at the Earth's surface, affects our planet. In sum, our research deals with the entire "Earth System" including the influence of mankind.
