SONORUS: 14 Open Positions in the Field of Urban Sound Planning

SONORUS is an Initial Training Network (ITN, Nr. 290110, duration 1/10 2012 – 30/9 2016) in the 7th framework programme People of the EC. The coordinator of the project is Chalmers University of Technology. Within this project we are seeking 14 young researchers (early‐stage researcher, ESR) with a duration of 36 month to join the different partners in the project.

Project Background

Traffic noise pollution in urban areas is a major environmental problem within the European Union. Creating an acceptable acoustic outdoor environment is a big challenge of high need. Creating as well as preserving environments, which are supportive for health and well-being in a sustainable manner is an even bigger but unavoidable task. In order to succeed, specialists are required with a broad research competence covering areas such as acoustic prediction methods, noise control and soundscaping, but also aspects of city and traffic planning. However, specialists equipped with such a competence spectrum are hardly found.

Therefore, the goal of SONORUS is to close this gap and bring together universities, enterprises and public organizations that aim to offer training to ESRs in an arena of trans-disciplinary research. The training is designed around real-life urban test sites that are characterized by a poor acoustic environment due to noise from road, rail or air traffic. These test sites are provided by four major European cities (Berlin, Rome, Antwerpen and Brighton). To these test sites, the ESRs will apply their knowledge and skills gained from individual acoustics related research projects, in-depth courses on acoustics as well as on different aspects of spatial planning.

From SONORUS a new generation of researchers will emerge with the profile needed to reverse the negative trend of a deteriorating acoustic outdoor environment in urban areas. Successfully Participation in the SONORUS will be awarded with an "Urban Sound Planner Certificate".

The EMMLCT Program in Brief

The EMMLCT program is an international distributed Master of Science
course. The program involves studying one year each at two different
Universities of the consortium. After completing all study requirements

The course consists of compulsory core modules, as well as elective
advanced modules in Language Technology and Computer Science, optionally
complemented by a project, and completed by a Master Thesis.

and communication technologies and it strengthens their ability to work
according to scientific methods. Moreover, the students acquire
practice-oriented knowledge by choosing appropriate combinations of

demands of industry and research in the rapidly growing area of Language

We are now accepting applications for the Erasmus Mundus Program 'International
Doctorate for Experimental Approaches to Language And Brain' (IDEALAB).
The PhD program has been established as an outstanding 3-year doctoral training
to its candidates with a primary focus on language acquisition and disorders
integrating interdisciplinary approaches.

For this purpose, four European universities  (Potsdam (GER),Groningen (NL),
Newcastle- upon-Tyne (GB), Trento/Rovereto (IT)) and one non-European
university (Macquarie University Sydney (AU)) provide an intellectual environment
for original and independent research on experimental and clinical aspects of
language and the brain.  Associated members from Research & Development
industries contribute in various ways to the program and stimulate an innovative
environment. They are potential co-supervisors and are involved in training.
Finally, there are seven clinics associated to the consortium, amongst others the
non-European rehabilitation center in Moscow which is the world's largest centre
for language disorders in the world. The associated clinics provide internships to
study unimpaired as well as impaired language of children and adults.

The program is jointly offered by a transnational consortium with an integrated
study program along with required mobility between the participating institutions.
The mobility plan of each individual young researcher is tailored according to the
particular specialities required by the thesis topic.

The  Helmholtz  graduate research school GeoSim (Explorative Simulation in Earth-Sciences) is a collaborative effort of researchers in departments of Earth and Mathematical Sciences at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ Potsdam), Potsdam University and FU Berlin. Currently, 23 PhD students from 9 countries and 3 continents are enrolled. We invite applications for an additional 10 PhD fellowships in the field of simulation of Earth System processes.

GeoSim researchers use numerical and physical  simulation as an explorative tool  for advancing our qualitative and quantitative understanding of Earth’s complex systems in the fields of hydrological flow and transport processes, solid earth dynamics and earthquakes,  and  atmosphere-hydrosphere dynamics and climate. Methods include data exploration and assimilation, analysis of scaling properties of geo-processes,computer-aided modelling of incompletely known systems. We aim to train a new generation of young, interdisciplinary scientists with skills in combining applied geosciences with the development of physical concepts of Earth systems, mathematical abstraction, and the use of high-performance computing.

What we offer

Training will include advanced courses in the above subjects, summer schools, and workshops complementing the research work in the topic of the PhD thesis. Candidates will be co-supervised by an earth scientist and a mathematician and will  benefit from a stimulating interdisciplinary research 

environment. The three-year PhD fellowships amount 1500 euro/month (tax free).

What we ask

We expect candidates to contribute to the development of their own research topic and to participate in the school’s curriculum. At the time of appointment, candidates should have a MSc degree (or equivalent) in at least one of the following fields as well as a strong affinity with a complementary discipline: Earth Sciences (solid earth science, hydrology, atmospheric science, meteorology, climatology),  Mathematics,  Physics, Chemistry and Software Engineering.

Research at the Graduate School especially focuses on interrelations and
interdependencies between East and Southeast Europe and other regions
of the World. A lively interest in interdisciplinary research questions and
sensitivity for transnational and spatial perspectives are therefore expected.
In the context of its primary focus on East and Southeast Europe, the
Graduate School draws on the following disciplines: History, Literary and
Language Studies, Art History, Theater Studies, Political Sciences and Law.
In the context of cross-regional comparisons and transfer studies the
School's expertise in Area Studies is complemented by insights from
Chinese, Japanese and North American Studies.

In an international working environment the Graduate School offers ideal
conditions for the realization of excellent research projects in the
Humanities as well as in Social and Legal Studies which focus on East and
Southeast Europe, and the interconnection of this region with other regions
of the world. Residential obligation in Munich or Regensburg, two cities
noted for very high quality of living, is stipulated.

The doctoral positions are available for a period of two years with the option
of extension for another eighteen months. Remuneration is based on Grade
E 13 TV-L (65%) of the German Public Service Salary Scale. The teaching
obligation amounts to two SPW.

PhD Scholarships are awarded for two years with the option of extension for
another eighteen months. A basic monthly stipend of 1.365 Euro is
provided, plus travel funds, grants for material costs as well as family
allowances and child-care expenses in accordance with DFG guidelines
where applicable.
