Research
Assistant in "Medical Navigation for Computer-Assisted
Surgery"
Project
Description:
Computer-assisted surgery (CAS) refers to surgical methods that
make use of computer technology to aid in planning and executing surgical
procedures. These methods enabled physicians to better visualize the target area
and give a more accurate diagnosis. Medical navigation system plays an important
role in CAS, since it provides reliable localization and tracking of object (or
human body part) during the surgical procedures. Commonly the tracker subsystem
used in the medical navigation is designed for cases where the positions of
camera and target area undergo only slight changes, if any, during the entire
process. When this presumed condition is not available, the navigation system
will not work. Such situation occurs when e.g. the camera view is disrupted by
something for a while. To overcome this problem we need an intelligent
navigation system which is capable for memorizing the latest and predicting the
next state of system parameters.
This
research project aims at developing (and implementing) a theoretical model of a
smart medical navigation system for CAS. The proposed system will consist of
digital camera that automatically captures the position of reference points
attached to the surface of a target of interest. The generated image data are
then fed to the image processing unit which will detect the reference points in
the image and subsequently compute their actual locations. The result will be
applied to determine the current position and orientation of the target. In
anticipating the abrupt change of the observed target, a Kalman filter will be
embedded to ensure the robustness of the proposed model. A good understanding on
the principle work of a simple medical navigation system which is equipped with
the robust object tracking feature would provide a basis for the development of
more complex navigation systems that would be useful for the improvement of
future CAS.
