University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship

Beginning with the 2009/2010 academic year the UMGF will be further devolved to the Unit level. A unit is typically a Department but in the case of non-departmentalized faculties (e.g., Kinesology and Recreation Management, Law, Music, Pharmacy, and Social Work) can refer to a faculty, or even a program (e.g., Applied Health, Disability Studies Peace and Conflict Studies). UMGFs are being further devolved to the Unit level to increase the flexibility to whom and when these scholarships are awarded.  Please check with your unit in January 2012 for details on how to be considered for a UMGF in your unit.
The UMGF is used to determine the recipients of the listed supplemental awards, which are meant to be held with the UMGF. The same process is used to upgrade new Master’s UMGF recipients to the Manitoba Graduate Scholarship for Master’s students. These supplemental award offers and MGS upgrades will occur in July of each year. Only students who have received an offer as of July will be included in the supplemental offers and upgrades.
Value for a 12 month period:
PhD $16,000

Masters $12,000
UMGF ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Academic standing: Students with a minimum GPA of 3.75 (above B+) at a recognized university based on a Bachelor, Masters, Graduate Diploma or a Doctoral degree. Please use admissions criteria in calculating GPA, i.e., last 60 credit hours or equivalent.

Citizenship: All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are encouraged to apply to CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC scholarships, if there are eligible for funding from these research councils. Tricouncil eligible students who do not apply for a tricouncil award may be considered ineligible for a UMGF.

Fields of study: Students in all fields of study of graduate studies are eligible to apply.

Years of graduate study: Students are eligible to receive the UMGF for the first 24 months of their Master’s program and the first 48 months of their PhD program. Total maximum UMGF support for any individual graduate student is 48 months.

US - Indonesia Research: $110 thousand per year for 3 years

PROPOSAL DEADLINE: DECEMBER 4, 2012, 11:59 PM (U.S. EASTERN STANDARD TIME.

Funding: Up to $110,000 per year for up to three years.

"The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and
the National Sciences Foundation (NSF) are working together to support
the second cycle of Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research
(PEER) Science. PEER Science is a competitive grants program that
invites scientists in developing countries to apply for funds to
support research and capacity-building activities on topics of
importance to USAID and conducted in partnership with their NSF-funded
collaborators.

Indonesia: PEER Science is seeking research projects that support the
goals and objectives of USAID/Indonesia as outlined in the mission’s
Country Strategy (http://indonesia.usaid.gov/en/home). Projects should
also contribute to USAID/Indonesia’s higher education objectives by
achieving one or more of the following:

1. Improved instructional delivery through better teaching methods and
more relevant curricula in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics) field;

2. Enhanced research skills and methods in a STEM field; and

3. New and/or strengthened partnerships between Indonesian and
U.S.-based researchers.

USAID/Indonesia is particularly interested in projects that involve
other external stakeholders such as private sector partners as well as
projects that have the potential to inform government policy at the
national or local level.

Budget requests should be developed commensurate with the support
needed to achieve the project goals. Most projects are anticipated to
run for one to three years, with release of each funding increment
contingent on the project meeting annual financial and technical
reporting requirements. The number of PEER Science awards is subject
to the availability of funds.

Single institution awards are anticipated to range in size from
$30,000 to $60,000 per year for one to three years. A few larger and
more complex projects (those involving multiple institutions and/or
multiple countries, with one of them serving as the lead) may receive
up to $110,000 per year for up to three years. Applicants whose
funding requests do not fit within these parameters are encouraged to
contact PEER Science staff at the National Academies (peer@nas.edu)
before preparing their proposals. When preparing their PEER Science
proposal budgets, applicants should keep in mind that requested funds
may be used only to support costs for developing country researchers
and institutions.

Post-Doctoral and Graduate Positions Available (Montana Univ)

Post-Doctoral and Graduate Positions Available in Disease Ecology and Integrated Management of Vector-Transmitted Cereal Viruses

Project summary: In the western Great Plains Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), Wheat mosaic virus (WMoV), and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV) are serious diseases of winter wheat transmitted by the same mite vector, the wheat curl mite. Management of these mite-transmitted diseases relies upon understanding abiotic and biotic factors that drive survival and spread of the vector and pathogen as there are no chemical controls options and multiple non-crop species can serve as reservoirs for vector/virus. Although managing green bridge hosts and planting dates are important tools to mitigate disease risk, the effect of environmental and biological variables on mite and virus population dynamics is inadequately understood; negatively impacting the potential for successful incorporation of these management tools.
We are recruiting candidates for one PhD and one Post-Doctoral position to quantify risk of disease incidence and severity factors across the biological and environmental variability seen in the Great Plains. Results will improve our understanding on the factors conditioning the spread and impact of vector-transmitted cereal viruses as well as approaches to mitigate them.

Location: Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana. MSU is one of the top mid- sized research institutions located in the heart of the Big Sky country. Bozeman was ranked 5th on Outside magazine’s “40 Best College Towns” and the surrounding area offers access to Yellowstone NP and some of the best fly-fishing, hiking, rafting, and skiing in America. For more details visit http://www.montana.edu/wwwnss/thebest.shtml.

Application. Successful candidates will be members of a vibrant, interdisciplinary team of researchers on plant pathology and agro-ecology. Candidates must hold an appropriate degree in ecology, agroecology, or plant pathology. Excellent work ethic, team player, and proficiency in English language (written and oral) are required. Submit 1) Name of the position to which you are applying, 2) Letter of application describing career goals and research interests, 3) Resume, transcripts, and 4) Names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of three references. 5. CICESE, Ensenada, Mexico
Postdoc Opportunity at CICESE, Ensenada, Mexico
Closing date: May 18, 2012
The Waves Group of CICESE, as part of the Physical Oceanography Department is seeking candidates for a three-year postdoc position. As part of a recent CONACYT-funded project, the postdoc will work with the Principal Investigator (F. J. Ocampo-Torres) and colleagues in the Waves Group at CICESE (P. Osuna and others), along with several outside collaborators (from UABC in Ensenada, U.Marseilles in France, and Met Institutt in Norway).
Some of the effects of the sea surface in the marine-boundary layer has already been documented. Moreover, detailed aspects related to the presence of swell in opposing direction to the wind generated waves is still a subject of further research.
Understanding the process by which the marine-boundary layer is influenced by combined swell and wind-sea is necessary to constrain the description of its future behavior in coupled models. Within this broad context, the specific purpose of the project is to acquire detailed observations in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, hindcast the wave spectrum in the interest region, study air-sea interaction under accelerating-decelerating winds in the laboratory, and determine ocean-atmosphere fluxes of CO2, heat and moisture under the presence of mixed seas.
We seek for a recent PhD graduate interested in approaching these challenging problems.
Essential qualifications include: PhD in Oceanography, Applied Math, Physics or related field, a strong math and physics background, and the ability to gain insight from observational data. Knowledge of Fortran and model development experience is desirable. She/He is also expected to actively collaborate in writing and submitting scientific manuscripts and proposals for funding, as well as to collaborate in other research activities within the Waves Group in CICESE.
Please send a CV along with the names and contact information of three references to F. J. Ocampo-Torres and Pedro Osuna. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Inquiries regarding further details about the position are welcome.

PhD Positions

1. ETH Zurich, Switzerland
PhD position in the modeling of step formation in steep streams at ETH Zurich, Switzerland
Closing date: June 1, 2012
Research is on the critical state at which steps are formed with the toolbox of self-organized criticality and cellular automaton modeling of step formation by grain blocking and hydraulically-driven step collapse in a 1-d and 2-d channel. Field work in Alptal is involved (in collaboration with WSL).
For more details contact: Dr Peter Molnar.

2. Grenoble, France
PhD, Discrete Element Modelling of Bedload Sediment Transport, Grenoble, France
Transport of bedload, the larger material that is transported in stream channels, has major consequences for public safety, for the management of water resources, and for environmental sustainability. Most particularly, in mountains, steep slopes drive intense transport of a wide range of grain sizes. As discussed recently (Frey and Church 2009)*, an important reason for our limited ability to predict sediment flux is that we have no general understanding of grain-grain interactions in stream channels,
especially due to a very wide range of grain size leading to grain size sorting or segregation (Fig.A). Movement of beads on a mobile bed in a turbulent supercritical flow on steep slopes has been studied at Cemagref in a two-dimensional channel. A high speed camera and image analysis allow us to measure variables at the particle scale such as positions, instantaneous velocities, trajectories, states of movements.
Two datasets are available, one relative to a uniform size of particle, the other pertaining to a segregating binary mixture (Fig.B).
This PhD subject is about discrete element modelling of bedload. In this type of modelling, each individual particle (sand grain, rock, …) is taken into account and intergranular interactions are modelled with simple laws (e.g. Coulomb friction). Gravity and contact forces permit to solve the dynamical behaviour of the system. The main issue will be to couple an existing discrete element model (yade-dem.org) with the fluid,
taking into account hydrodynamic forces. Calibration and validation will be performed with the help of both the uniform and binary datasets.
A. River armoring B. Segregation in a Flume
This PhD located in Grenoble, in the French Alps, will benefit from a collaboration with the laboratory 3SR, sols, solides, structures risques (discrete element modelling and fluid/grain coupling) and the laboratory LEGI, écoulements géophysiques et industriels (Turbulent flow modelling with particles).
Cemagref (Irstea), the National Institute in Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture, is a public research organisation depending on the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Research of the French Government. It employs over 1000 scientists and technicians specialising in interdisciplinary research in the field of environmental sciences, natural risks, rural life, agriculture, soil conservation, water
quality, vegetation and wildlife. The Grenoble centre is specialised in mountain-related issues. It conducts research in analysis and modelling of physical processes involved in the initiation and flowing of bedload transport, debris flows and snow avalanches, and their interactions with protective structures.
