PhD Studentship
Design and measurement methodologies of millimetre-wave smart antennas
University of Surrey
Applications are invited for a funded three-year PhD studentship
starting on 1 January 2013 to investigate the novel design and
measurement methodologies of millimetre-wave smart antennas.
Millimetre-wave smart antennas using, for example printed
reflectarray, are the key technology for satellite communications,
wireless local area networks and radars. At millimetre-wave bands they
offer multi-gigabit speeds to complement existing Wi-Fi capabilities
and enable new cutting-edge wireless applications. Main objectives of
this project include novel designs, implementations and measurement
techniques of millimetre-wave smart antennas. It will involve antenna
design, EM modelling and simulation, RF/millimetre-wave circuit
design, DSP algorithms, antenna measurement methodologies, FGPA
implementations, etc.
Candidates should hold a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in
Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Overseas students with
equivalent degrees will also be considered. The candidate will
preferably have a Master degree, and research backgrounds in one or
more of the following areas: antenna design, RF circuit design,
antenna measurement, and electromagnetics.
The award will be for a period of 3 years and include Home/Overseas
tuition fees plus a stipend (approx £13,590 p.a). Applications are
welcome from both the UK and internationally.
The student will be jointly supervised by Dr. Tian Hong Loh at The
National Physical Laboratory (NPL), and Dr. Steven Gao at University
of Surrey, UK. NPL is the UK's National Measurement Institute and is a
world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most
accurate measurement standards, science and technology. The novel
measurement techniques will be explored in the small and smart antenna
test range at NPL, which allows non-invasive antenna measurements. Dr.
Gao's Research Group at Surrey has extensive experience in the designs
of satellite communication antennas, smart antennas, phased arrays and
RF/millimeter-wave wireless systems.
Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr. Steven Gao, email:
s.gao@surrey.ac.uk.
Applications:
Applications should be sent to Dr. Steven Gao by post to Dr. Steven
Gao, Head of Antennas/RF/MM-Wave Group, Surrey Space Centre,
University of Surrey, Guildford, GU2 7XH, UK. Completed applications
should include a CV, a statement of research interests, the completed
application form, quoting the above studentship together with copies
of transcripts and certificate of qualifications. The Application Form
can be downloaded from:
