The Department of Linguistics and English Language at the University of
Manchester invites high-quality PhD proposals in any of our areas of research
expertise. Outstanding applications will be eligible for a several competitive
scholarships.
The President's Doctoral Scholar (PDS) Competition is open to students of all
nationalities and research areas starting in September 2013. The Award covers
tuition fees (home/EU or international, as appropriate) and the equivalent of
the research council stipend (£13,590 in 2012-13).

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Competition is open to UK and
EU students starting a PhD degree in September 2013.The award covers tuition
fees and a maintenance stipend (£13,590 in 2012-13) for UK students and
tuition fees only for EU students.

In order for applicants to be considered for either a PDS or an AHRC award, an
application to the School for a place on the PhD programme has to be received
by Friday 1 February 2013. The submission date for the applications under the
PDS and AHRC schemes is Friday 1 March 2013. Please see

details of the application process and further information. Information on
additional awards (Graduate Scholarships and fee bursaries) offered by the
School, for which applicants may be eligible, will also be posted there once
confirmed.
The Department of Linguistics and English Language is an international centre
for Linguistics and English Language, with 20 full-time members of staff and
approximately 25 Postgraduate Research students. Its staff members, many of
whom are internationally renowned scholars in their specialisms, represent a
unique breadth of subject areas and theoretical approaches. Each of them also
has a special interest in particular languages and language families. In their
research, members of the department combine the advancement of theoretical
approaches with a strong concern for their empirical and methodological
