Two 2 PhD Research fellowship positions in sociolinguistics or related field
are available at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies,

The fellowships are for a period of 3 years and will be attached to the
project 'Standardising Minority Languages'. The aim of the project is to
carry out in-depth analyses of the standardisation of European Regional or
Minority Languages, expanding the focus from macro-level processes and
linguistic aspects of standardisation to include investigations of how users
relate to standardisation processes.

The successful applicants are expected to investigate the standardisation
processes related to a minority languages protected by the European
Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Applicants are expected to

The persons appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty's organised
research training. The academic work must result in a doctoral thesis that
will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD.
The persons appointed are expected to join the research group and
contribute to development of the academic environment. The appointment is
for a period of 3 years.

Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian Master's degree
or corresponding education in a field relevant to the proposed project (i.e.
sociolinguistics, social studies of science and technology, social
anthropology, sociology).

5 social science PhD student vacancies (only Indonesian nationality) at Maastricht University for 4 years

At International Centre for Integrated assessment and Sustainable development (ICIS), Maastricht University, 5 PhD student vacancies are available for candidates from Indonesia within the research program Social and economic effects of partnering for change in agricultural commodity chains: A Southern perspective.

The research program is a collaboration between Maastricht University (the Netherlands) and the University of Lampung and Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta. The program has been funded by DIKTI Indonesia and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

This research program aims to analyze the social and economic effects of global certifying sustainability partnerships that aim to connect Southern agricultural production to Northern consumption.

The global coffee and palm oil chains serve as main fields of research in the assessment part of the program. The prospective part of the research includes cocoa, spices, and aquaculture; commodities on which new certifying partnerships are in an early stage of development and implementation.

PhD 1 Studies the social and economic effects of coffee certification, with a specific focus on the livelihood effects for farmers

PhD2 Studies the social and economic effects of palm oil certification, with a specific focus on the livelihood effects for farmers

Requirements

Candidates are highly motivated and enthusiastic with an interdisciplinary view. The candidates have strong academic abilities and the ambition to become an excellent researcher with an outspoken interest in and proven qualifications for doing research and fieldwork. Successful candidates are expected to meet the following requirements:

◦Have the Indonesian nationality and are working at an Indonesian university/ research organization or willing to do this after completion of the dissertation.
◦Have finished a master degree from a reputable university (domestic or abroad) in a social science discipline with excellent results (political science, sociology, (agricultural or institutional) economics, environmental studies or other related fields). Having written a master thesis on a topic related to the program or a related experience / extensive knowledge is preferable.
◦Have the willingness and proven ability to work cooperatively with the other PhD students and able to work annually approximately 6 months at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
◦Have a creative and dynamic personality and an enthusiastic and cooperative working attitude.
◦Have a strong analytical capacity and are able to formulating views, ideas and concepts based upon complex information, and constructing conceptual frameworks or models.
◦Have good communicative skills and able to present ideas and information clearly
◦Are able to survey the work; setting goals and priorities and plan the activities
◦Have an excellent written and verbal English language skill. Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to take the IELTS Test or TOEFL test.

As all doctoral programmes are taught in English, proof of fluency in that language is a prerequisite for admission. Scholarships: The School makes available a number of fully-funded three-year scholarships. In general, all our doctoral students are supported by a scholarship. Currently the School does not charge an admission fee.

Admission procedures: The procedure consists of two steps and a third step for the doctoral Programme in Sociology and Social Research:

The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme

The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme is an international researcher mobility programme offering 33 fellowships for the academic year. It proposes 10-month residencies in one of the 14 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Cambridge, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyons, Nantes, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna, Wassenaar. The Programme builds on the strong reputation of the Institutes for Advanced Study for promoting the concentrated, self-directed work of excellent researchers within the stimulating environment of a multi-disciplinary and international group of fellows.



EURIAS Fellowships are mainly offered in the fields of the humanities and social sciences but may also be granted to scholars in natural and exact sciences, if their proposed research project does not require laboratory facilities. The diversity of the 14 participating IAS —which have agreed on a common selection procedure— offers a wide range of possible research contexts in Europe for worldwide scholars . Applicants select up to three IAS outside their country of nationality or residence as possible host institutions.

The Programme welcomes applications worldwide from promising scholars at an early stage of their careers as well as from established senior researchers. During their fellowship, EURIAS fellows benefit from the high-quality research environment and working conditions provided by the host Institute. All IAS have agreed on common standards for EURIAS fellows, including the provision of a living allowance (in the range of € 26,000 for a junior fellow and € 38,000 for a senior fellow), accommodation (or a mobility allowance), a research budget, plus coverage of travel expenses.

Researchers from all countries are eligible for the programme. They cannot apply for an institute located in their country of nationality or residence.

The Graduate Center of Economic and Social Research at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) welcomes applications from highly qualified post-graduated students from all over the world to attend its structured doctoral training program in economics and social sciences.

Applicants must hold a MA degree or a diploma in economics, business and administration or social sciences in order to apply. Degrees from other related fields (such as civil engineering or statistics) also fulfil the admission requirements of the program. Students with a degree in economics follow the economic track that leads to a PhD in economics; students with a degree in sociology follow a social science track which leads to a PhD in sociology. There is a number of core courses that both groups of students will attend.

The German Institute of Economic Research DIW Berlin is one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany. We are an independent, non-profit institute involved in economic research, service and policy advice. We co-operate closely with universities in Berlin and Brandenburg and in international academic networks.

The goal of Graduate Center's activities is to provide outstanding doctoral students with a research environment and a training structure that will develop their talents in an accordingly exemplary manner. It leads them to a deep understanding of economic and social processes and offers them the opportunity to apply their knowledge within the professional research environment of one of the leading economic think tanks in Germany. The 3-year program follows a dual training approach. It offers

* high-level core and field courses in the first year
* one research internship in Berlin
* a three month stay in Washington DC including advanced courses by US-based scholars and research activities at international renowned think tanks
* on-the-job training within research projects of the DIW Berlin in the 2. and 3. year.

After successfully finishing the programme students have submitted a number of papers to refereed scientific journals. They will receive a certificate confirming participation together with a doctoral degree.

The Graduate Center offers a scholarship of €1000 per month in the first year to each doctoral student admitted. After successful completion of the first year the doctoral students are assigned to the research departments of the Institute. PhD position project ‘European Social Survey’ (1.0 fte)

The School of Management and Governance (SMG) is a growing school that strives to hold a leading position in the field of business and social sciences and to do joint education and research with the technical schools of the University of Twente. The school focuses on management, governance, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. In all these fields, the school provides bachelor, master and professional development programmes. In addition, scientific and applied research is carried out in various branches, such as health care, higher education, banking, and services business. Research is accommodated within the university research institutes: The Institute for Governance Studies (IGS), and the Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT). The school has approximately 350 staff and 2,200 students.

Research in the Department of Political Science and Research Methods focuses on the relationship between citizens and their government in multilevel political systems. Core topics include political behavior, political representation and the legitimacy of government, and the innovation of democratic governance. An emphasis on research methodology is central to all our research endeavors. The department has a strong record in international comparative survey research and is strongly involved in a number of prominent international collaborative projects in the field of electoral research and political representation at the local, national, and European level. The Department of Political Science and Research Methods of the University of Twente invites applications for a:

The National Coordinators of the ESS are the link between the national survey operation and the central ESS organization. The National Coordinators are responsible for the preparation, conduct, delivery and dissemination of the ESS in their country. For Round 5 of the ESS prof. dr. Kees Aarts has been appointed as National Coordinator of the Netherlands. In the context of Round 5, a number of separately funded Development Projects are being prepared. The vacant position involves carrying out one of these projects, focusing on the effects of the choice of sampling frames on core survey variables. The successful candidate will be required to carry out the Development Project under supervision, and to complete a PhD thesis of which the Development Project will be part.

The position also entails participation in the local ESS team at the University of Twente. Some teaching duties will be involved.

Profile

You have a master degree in Political Science, European Studies, Public Administration or a related field in the social sciences. You have a thorough knowledge of the methodology and techniques of empirical social research, as evidenced in your master thesis. You are motivated and able to work independently as well as in collaborative projects. You are proficient in English as well as Dutch.

Employment conditions

We offer a challenging position in a stimulating environment. As a PhD candidate you will be appointed in a full-time position for a period of four years, at the end of which you must have completed your PhD thesis. The gross monthly salary for a PhD increases from € 2042,- in the first year to € 2612,- in the final year (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). The School of Applied Social Sciences at Durham University invites applications for a range of studentships and bursaries for PhD study starting in October 2009. Fully funded Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) studentships are available for Sociology (including Criminology and Sociology of Sport) and Social Work (including Community and Youth Work) and are open to UK and EU students. ESRC studentships

+3 studentships are for those who have already completed recognised ESRC research training at Masters level; 1+3 studentships are for those without a recognised research Masters degree. The 1+3 award is for a four-year programme, including a one-year MA in Social Research. During this year, students develop a PhD proposal, which is then completed during the subsequent three years. These awards include maintenance grants and tuition fees paid for UK students. For EU students the awards cover tuition fees only. Annual maintenance grants (£12,940 at 2008-9 rate, subject to adjustment) do not attract income tax or National Insurance.
