PhD student position in air quality modeling in Switzerland

The Paul Scherrer Institut is a centre for multi-disciplinary research and one of the world's leading user laboratories. With its 1200 employees it belongs as an autonomous institution to the Swiss ETH domain and concentrates its activities on solid-state research and material sciences, elementary particle and astrophysics, energy and environmental research as well as on biology and medicine.

The Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry (LAC) is engaged in air quality and climate research by field studies, smog chamber experiments and chemical transport models.

We are offering a PhD Student position in the field of Air quality modeling
The chemical composition of particulate matter was recently measured and analyzed in several field campaigns at different locations in unprecedented detail. This provides a unique opportunity to evaluate 3-dimensional photochemical models including emissions, meteorological transport, gasphase and aerosol chemistry. The challenges are on the one hand to get the boundary layer meteorological processes right on the other hand to get the emissions right. Recent research has shown that one also needs to revisit the assumptions concerning the formation processes leading to secondary
organic aerosols.

The project will focus on aerosol formation processes in Switzerland and Europe. An intensive collaboration is planned with another PhD student focusing on meteorology and with a Canadian research group. A competitive Salary will be available.

Your tasks
- Use the meteorological models MM5 and/or the Alpine Model (aLMo) in combination with the chemical transport model CAMx in various configurations
- Improve the gaseous emissions, e.g. concerning biogenic sesqui-terpene emissions
- Improve the primary aerosol emissions (especially from domestic wood burning)
- Use and/or develop new schemes to represent the secondary organic aerosol formation in an appropriate manner (2)
- Test and evaluate the model versus various available and new data sets
- Present the results at workshops, conferences and in peer-reviewed journals

Your profile
You have a master/diploma degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, chemistry or environmental science. Ideally, you already have some experience in meteorological or air quality modeling. Programming and computer skills are crucial. Good communication skills in English are required and in German beneficial.

We are looking forward to your application

Vacant PhD Position at the University of Bonn

Research field:
Numerical modeling of atmospheric chemical processes

Position:
A PhD position is available at the Meteorological Institute of the University of Bonn. Together with another Postdoc student, the applicant will work within a common research project of the Meteorological Institutes of the Universities of Bonn and Mainz and the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry in Mainz.

Contract:
The research is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It is limited to a three year period with a salary TVL 13/2.

Proposed research of the project:
Numerical modeling of chemical processes in the atmosphere is essential to increase our understanding of atmospheric composition and its changes induced by human activity. In recent years, global-scale atmospheric models have been developed
that calculate the concentration and processing of atmospheric trace constituents. However, for key problems, e.g. local air quality and long-range transport from local sources, the development of high-resolution models is essential. In this project such a model will be developed. The model will be driven by consistent meteorological and chemical fields. This will be achieved through an online coupling of the global ECHAM5/MESSy system with the COSMO-model of the German Meteorological
Service. First applications of the newly developed model COSMO-MESSy will serve to investigate its capabilities for a detailed analysis of field measurements,
the direct simulation of mesoscale chemical perturbations like dust and biomass burning plumes, as well as an assessment and forecast of local air quality.

Qualifications:
Diploma/Master in meteorology, physics, informatics, mathematics or related fields.
Experience with numerical modeling of atmospheric processes. Skills in Linux, FORTRAN, IDL or others.

Aplications: Until end of December 2007 at the address:

PhD Project - Optimal use of biomass in power plant boilers Combustion and Harmful Emission Control Research Centre Department of Chemical Engineering

PhD Project - Optimal use of biomass in power plant boilers Combustion and Harmful Emission Control Research Centre Department of Chemical Engineering

A 3-year PhD position on the above mentioned topic is open at the CHEC (Combustion and Harmful Emission Control) Research Centre, Department of Chemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark.

*Supervisors: *Associate Professor Peter Arendt Jensen (paj@kt.dtu.dk), Associate Professor Flemming Frandsen (ff@kt.dtu.dk), Professor Kim Dam-Johansen (kdj@kt.dtu.dk).

*Background:
*Utilization of biomass on large power plants is a potentially efficient method to reduce net CO2 emissions and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Use of biomass fuels in large suspension-fired boilers may cause operational problems. One example is when straw is applied as fuel in suspension fired boilers whereby severe ash deposit formation in the boiler chamber often takes place. Improved technologies for ash deposit removal are therefore needed.

This PhD study will deal with the development of models, experimental tools and innovative concepts to reduce ash related problems in biomass fired power plant boilers. The study shall be founded on solid knowledge on Chemical Engineering and will be conducted in tight collaboration with industrial partners. In some recent CHEC-projects both modeling tools, advanced probes and laboratory equipment have been developed and those tools will be available for the PhD project.

*Project content:
*The main objective is to develop methods to optimize the use of straw in power plant boilers and to develop and verify a model of the transient deposit formation in a boiler. Practical probe measurements on a full scale boiler will form the basis for a mathematical model for deposit formation taking all important parameters into consideration. Based on the results strategies for efficient boiler operation is to be established. The project will be conducted in collaboration with the power company Vattenfall.

The PhD-candidate will carry out the model development and conduct the probe measurements together with technicians. Vattenfall will operate the boiler and participate in the planning of the project.

*Contents of PhD application:
*Candidates should hold a master degree in chemical engineering, or similar
degree with an equivalent academic level. Applications must include Curriculum Vitae, a statement on your motivation for applying, recommendations, and copies of all grade lists and other relevant diplomas.

PhD Studentship Integrated Constructed Wetlands to Treat Domestic Wastewater

PhD Studentship Integrated Constructed Wetlands to Treat Domestic Wastewater

*Institute for Infrastructure and Environment in collaboration with Monaghan County Council (Ireland) and the Integrated Constructed Wetland Initiative*

A full PhD scholarship is available for a very good candidate (UK, EU or Overseas) with a background in civil and environmental engineering, environmental science, applied microbiology, ecology or equivalent, interested in carrying out experimental research of physical, biological and chemical processes occurring in wetlands treating domestic wastewater, and undertaking subsequently corresponding statistical data analysis and computer modelling studies. Work experience in academia, relevant industries and/or local authorities would be beneficial.

*Research Project Outline*
Integrated constructed wetlands (ICW) have been designed successfully to treat farmyard runoff following best management practice. They are popular because of their low capital and operational costs, high treatment efficiency, optimal integration into the landscape, and ecosystem and biodiversity enhancement benefits, and excellent compliance with socio-economic and sustainable needs. However, the application of ICW as the main treatment unit for large-scale domestic wastewater treatment plants is novel, and concerns need to be addressed that these ICW do not pollute groundwater and receiving watercourses.

Treatment wetland systems are currently designed based on past empirical observations. There is a clear need for a decision support tool for the design and operation of ICW treating domestic wastewater incorporating standard engineering and microbiological variables. This can be achieved by incorporating microbiological parameter into novel engineering decision support methodologies.

A comprehensive statistical data analysis will be performed before predictive modelling. A neuro-fuzzy modelling approach is likely to be used to gain insight into the processes within ICW in space and time, and will be applied to assess the overall system performance.

*Study Location*
The candidate is expected to work predominantly at two locations: Monaghan County Council, Monaghan, Ireland; The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.

*Candidate and Supervision*
The successful candidate will have a 1st or 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject and will ideally have a proven commitment to working in field and laboratory environments. The candidate will receive supervision and guidance from an experienced urban water and wetland research team. The lead academic supervisor will be Dr Miklas Scholz (The University of Edinburgh), and the external supervisor will be Dr Rory Harrington (Irish Department of the Environment Heritage and Local Government). The student will also report to a representative from Monaghan
County Council.

*Application Procedure*
Monaghan County Council will fund one full PhD scholarship covering student maintenance, project consumables and equipment, travel costs, and bench and postgraduate registration fees available to UK, EU and international students. *The exact amount (between £58 and £85k)* of the scholarship will be subject to the fee status and needs of the candidate.

The PhD studentship will be awarded for three years. No deadline for applications has been set. The search for a suitable candidate will continue as long as necessary. However, *it is anticipated that the official start date is likely to be around 1 March 2008, but an early start will be encouraged*.

PhD Positions in Rehabilitation Robotics Institute of Automation, University of Bremen

PhD Positions in Rehabilitation Robotics Institute of Automation, University of Bremen

The Institute of Automation, University of Bremen, Germany, has openings for three PhD positions (E 13 TV-L) – under the condition of job release – in the project AMaRob (www.amarob.de,www.iat.uni-bremen.de/page.php/friend2). The Institute of Automation has a strong tradition in robotics and image processing, and scientists and students from more than nine countries are working at the institute.

The qualified candidate will join an already existing team, and should carry out high level research in the field of
• Safety and software architecture or
• Grasping with Local Sensors or
• Intelligent Environments at Workplaces
In the following, these fields are described in more detail:

Emphasis on Safety and Software Architecture As the rehabilitation robot operates in the vicinity of humans, the safety of the system is a very important issue. The candidate should apply available and research new solutions for increasing the safety of the system and especially within the software, as well as introduce methodologies which insure the quality of software.

Emphasis on Grasping with Local Sensors This field focuses on robust grasping of different objects by using local sensors. Object grasping is a central issue for a robotic system that includes manipulators. There have been a lot of research activities in this field, but the desired robustness is still not achieved. Recent developments of smaller and more powerful sensors, as well as more capable grippers offer a broad range of possibilities for further improvements. Moreover, including learning strategies would add further enhancements not only from the practical, but also from the scientific point of view.

Emphasis on Intelligent Environment at Workplaces The most common understanding of "intelligent" environments is to introduce, within living environments, facilities that are capable of ambient computing. The objective is to support the human being in his activities of daily living. In contrast, our focus is to support a rehabilitation robotic system with smart environmental components and thus reduce the technical complexity of the robot system or to be able to solve certain robot tasks at all. Within the AMaRob project, different scenarios shall be realized that support strongly disabled persons at workplaces to reintegrate these persons into the working life.

Within this proposed field the candidate will be responsible for developing methodologies of integrating actuators and sensors into the scenarios as well as into the software architecture.

Prerequisites:
- Dipl.-Ing. or Master degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or other comparable studies
- Very experienced in object-oriented programming in C++ and modelling with UML

Optional Experiences:
- Working with Linux
- CASE-tool supported Model Driven Development (Rhapsody/Telelogic)

Applications:
Interested candidates should send an application to Professor Axel Gräser, ag@iat.uni-bremen.de.
The application must contain:
- A complete C.V.
- Complete examination documents BSc., MSc., …
- A short description of ideas for a thesis in the above mentioned fields
- Names and full addresses of 2-3 scientists who may be asked for a recommendation

Deadline for Application: 30.11.2007
As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification disabled persons will be given priority.

The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute)

The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) will fill research positions and PhD positions in the areas

* Mathematical Relativity
* Geometric Analysis

Research programs concern the mathematical foundations of general relativity and related physical theories, they are based in analysis, geometry and numerical analysis. In particular, nonlinear partial differential equations are a common theme of our research.

The Einstein field equations model both the behaviour of global cosmological models and of isolated gravitating systems such as stars, black holes and galaxies. Our research addresses the qualitative and quantitative properties of solutions with respect to their local and global behaviour, singularity formation and numerical simulation and investigates the close correspondence between geometrical structures and physical concepts. Other field equations arise from string theory and the consideration of matter in modern mathematical models in elasticity, fluids, electromagnetism and gauge theories.

Several mathematical projects are concerned with the geometrical structure of space and time. They involve geometrical variational principles characterizing specific models in geometry and physics as well as geometric evolution equations like the mean curvature flow of surfaces and the Ricci-flow of Riemannian metrics.

There are close interactions with the research sections "Astrophysical Relativity" and "Quantum Gravity and Unified Theories" in the Albert Einstein Institute, as well as with the universities in Berlin and Potsdam.

Postdoctoral appointments typically are for two years, starting September 2008 or earlier.

A limited number of PhD-scholarships is available, compare also the website of our "International-Max-Planck-Research-School" *http://www.aei.mpg.de/imprs/index.html.

HYDROINFORMATICS: MODELLING AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR INTEGRATED WATER MANAGEMENT

HYDROINFORMATICS: MODELLING AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR INTEGRATED WATER MANAGEMENT

Hydroinformatics uses simulation modeling and information and communication technology to help in solving problems of hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering for better management of water-based systems. It provides the computer-based decision-support systems that now enter increasingly into the offices of engineers, water authorities and government agencies. The Hydroinformatics
course aims at enriching traditional engineering practice by introducing innovative approaches in order to open up for the participants much broader prospective.

The participants will learn subject groups comprising of:
1. Fundamentals, hydraulic and environmental processes
2. Information systems, GIS, communication and internet
3. Physically-based simulation modeling
4. Data-driven modeling and computational intelligence
5. System analysis, decision support and optimization
6. Applications : Coastal and estuarial systems modeling and Urban water system modeling
7. Integration subjects
8. Advanced topics

The programme is not a standard engineering programme. We often characterize it as a programme with difference. The difference arises in the extensive application of modeling, information technology and decision support tools for water management, in a challenging training programme with professors and top experts from leading universities and consultancies of various countries, that opens a range of future career opportunities. The founder of Hydroinformatics (Emeritus Prof. M. Abbot) does lecture at UNESCO-IHE. Participants often mention that "the course opened up new horizon in my professional life".

Most of the Hydroinformatics participants are financed through Netherlands Fellowship Programme. For this year, the programme is run directly to M.Sc undertaken for 1.5 years and the NFP will cover tuition fee and living cost.

The flier for the Hydroinformatics specialisation is at:
http://www.unesco-ihe.org/hi/hi_flier.pdf

We would also encourage people to apply for fellowships from other
funding agencies, especially the World Bank - see

ASIA Fellows Awards

ASIA Fellows Awards
Funding and Administration

The Asian Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Its office in Bangkok administers the ASIA Fellows Awards in the region with assistance from partner offices in Beijing, New Delhi, Manila, Hanoi, and Jakarta.

The ASF Board Management Committee is composed of twelve educational and public leaders from the People's Republic of China, South and Southeast Asia, and Australia. The Board Management Committee selects the fellows, oversees the program and makes policy decisions.

Goals and Objectives
The principal goal of the ASIA Fellows Awards is to increase the overall awareness of intellectual resources in the countries of Northeast, South and Southeast Asia and to contribute to the growth of long-range capabilities for cross-regional knowledge sharing. The ASIA Fellows Awards seek to develop regional expertise, establish a
multilateral network of Asian specialists from many disciplines, professional fields and countries, stimulate interdisciplinary research and inter-societal comparison, and contribute to new developments within existing area studies communities. The awards offer opportunities for outstanding young and mid-career Asian scholars, and professionals to gain knowledge of the countries in the region and an understanding of the contexts that shape global and regional issues through research. They enable the awardees to conduct research in a participating Asian country for six to nine months.

Eligibility
Citizens of and residents in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, the Republic of Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Master's/Doctoral degree or equivalent professional training and experiences (minimum of 3 years of university teaching experiences for scholars or 5 years of work experience for professionals.)

Applicants must be 45 years old or younger at the time of the application deadline. However, those up to 50 years old proposing to do research in the field of Humanities may be given special consideration.

Proficiency in English or in the language of the host country appropriate to the proposed research project. Those who are currently enrolled in a degree program, or have just completed a degree program for less than one to two years will not be
eligible to apply. Those who were a recipient of a Ford Foundation fellowship grant within the last two years prior to the application is also ineligible.

conditions of the awards
The proposed research projects for the ASIA Fellows Awards can be carried out in only one participating country (except the applicant's own) and under the following conditions:

No applicant can propose to conduct their research in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.
Applicants from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore cannot undertake research in each other's countries.
Applicants from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan can only apply to conduct their research in Thailand, the host country of ASF.

Any part of the proposed project that will be done in the applicant's own country will not be funded under the ASIA Fellows Awards.

The proposed grant period must be between 6-9 months. Once awarded, a fellow is required to conduct research at the proposed host country throughout the grant period. Splitting of the grant period or conducting research in the applicant's own country during the proposed grant period is not allowed under any circumstances.

While an applicant from South or Southeast Asia may propose a research project in a country within his/her own region, preference is given to applicants who propose to conduct research in a region of Asia other than their own (e.g., an award to an Indian scholar or professional for research in China).

Applicants should not plan to conduct their research in a country with which their home country has a difficult diplomatic relationship because of the uncertainties of securing an affiliation and obtaining a research clearance and visa for a long-term stay.

Fellowship awards are not for the purpose of completing requirements towards an academic degree (master's thesis or doctoral dissertations).

Fellowship Activities
ASIA Fellows awardees are placed at top-ranking research universities and non-academic institutions such as museums, archives or think tanks. Fellows should identify preferred placements in host countries. They may engage in an organized field research in the host country. Fellows are strongly encouraged to undertake some language training in their host country as part of facilitating their research. They are also provided the opportunities to present guest lectures, or to conduct seminars and workshops at the invitation of the host institutions. After completion of their fellowship, fellows can apply for post-fellowship awards of three months to further their research in a country within Asia, or for short-term travel awards to make presentations at overseas conferences and meetings. All fellows are required to attend the Orientation Program in July 2008, and the ASIA Fellows' Annual Conference in July 2010 at which they present their research results to fellow awardees and to scholars from the country in which the conference is held. They are also required to start the award by the end of December 2008. At the end of the fellowship, fellows must submit to the ASF office in Bangkok evidence of the results of their research project in the form of publications, photos of artistic works, audio/ video productions, etc.
