Research Fellow Positions on Nanoelectronics and Micro/Nano Fluid Dynamics

Two Research Fellow positions (postdoctoral position) are available in the Division of Physics and Applied Physics, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

The positions are in the interdisciplinary field of Nanoelectronics and Micro/Nano Fluid Mechanics and are available for immediate appointment.

Position 1:
We are looking preferably for a researcher holding a PhD in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or Nanoelectronics. Her/His task will be the development of thin-film resistance sensors using lithographic techniques and the designing of fast constant current feedback electronic circuitries. The Research Fellow will develop this novel device for probing the fluid mechanics present in ultrasonic cleaning. This position is initially available for 12 month and renewal will be based mutual agreements. Good communication skills in English, experiences in the clean-room/nanofabrication, and the design of analog circuitry are required. Additional knowledge in the fields of acoustics, fluid-mechanics, or physics is a plus. If interested, please send your CV and names/contacts of two references to Dr. Tom Wu.

Position 2:
The second position should be filled with a Researcher holding a PhD in Physics, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering. The candidate should have experience in experimental research in fluid mechanics and ideally in acoustics, too. In this 36 month research project she/he will study the wall shear stress on a microscopic level with the help of novel sensor developed in-house. For the calibration of the sensor some experience in operating pulsed lasers and high-speed photography
equipment is desired. Although, the research project is focused on the experimental side, candidates with a background in numerical simulations (boundary element method or finite-element method) are favorably considered. Good communication skill in English and a curious character are necessary to successfully complete this challenging interdisciplinary research project. If interested, please send your CV and names/contacts of two references to Dr. Claus-Dieter Ohl.

The University of Antwerp is a knowledgecentre, with 3400 co-workers, conducting ground-breaking and innovativeresearch of international standing. The university takes special care to ensureoptimal support for and supervision of its students and pays constant attentionto innovation in education. The university is an autonomous pluralistinstitution that is committed to the enhancement of an open, democratic andmulticultural society. It actively pursues an equal opportunities policy. The Faculty of Applied Economics has a full-time vacancy(m/f) for a Doctoral Grant at the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Sciences for the project Statistical experimental design for large-scale experimentation inmarketing and product development

Job description. You will prepare a Ph.D.thesis of the research project described below. In doing so, you will apply forexternally funded research grants. You will contribute to the research of theDepartment and to resulting publications. You may be involved in some limited teaching-related activities in the field of the Department.

Project description. The project is concerned withthe construction of programs of experiments in marketing and industry. Theseare used to study the impact of various factors on a response variable. Thesettings of the factors are often chosen according to a so-called orthogonalarray. In this project, several methods will be explored to find arrays forlarge numbers of factors with various numbers of settings. Also, methods forarranging these arrays in subsets will be sought. This is because, in marketingexperiments, each respondent has to evaluate a separate subset. In industrialexperiments, subsets are important too, because it is usually only possible tomake small numbers of observations under homogeneous conditions.

Profile and requirements. You have a Mastersdegree or equivalent in commercial engineering or a field related toMathematics or Statistics. Your teaching and research qualities are compatiblewith the policies of the University of Antwerp. You can provide evidence of an excellentacademic record. PhD Vacancy at Energy & Process Dept NTNU

PhD-position at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (Mass transfer in transient multiphase flow models)

Background
The area of the suggested work is within 1D transient flow models for flowing gas-liquid mixtures in pipes. Such models are based on numerical integration of conservation laws in time and along the pipe. Development of computer models then typically involve formulation of the base equations (two fluid models or mixture models), formulation of closure laws (friction models or slip relations) and testing of numerical methods (front capturing or front tracking methods, sequential or iterative solutions, low or high order schemes).

One particular issue is the formulation and implementation of mass transfer in the multiphase flow models. Instead of assuming thermal equilibrium between the phases, we will test schemes based on non-equilibrium mass transfer models.

The PhD research fellowship is awarded for a total of 4 years, including 25 % teaching assistance at bachelor’s and master’s degree level.

Objective
The objective of the work is to explore different computational concepts for mass transfer in dynamic multiphase flow models.

Areas of application
There will be two particular application areas for the research tasks. The main area is the multiphase transport of oil and gas in wells and sub-sea pipelines, where mass transfer often is the cause for the transition from single phase to two phase flow. The other area is heat transfer equipment, with boiling and condensation, and a particular application is the heat transfer in concentrating solar energy collectors.

Links to other projects
The work will relate to our activities with oil companies on multiphase transport, see the link for further information http://www.ept.ntnu.no/multiphase

We also foresee experimental activity on heat/mass transfer in a project on solar energy, where thermal energy is collected in a concentrating parabola dish and transported to a high temperature storage unit. There is a need for modelling natural flows in boiling systems as well as in heat pipes. See the link for some information on the solar project, which is a collaboration with African universities: http://www.ept.ntnu.no/NUFUSolar

Candidate
The candidate must have a strong interest in computational methods and programming. Suitable background can be within computational physics, fluid mechanics, mechanical or chemical engineering. Applicants for PhD grants should have an MSc or similar degree within relevant engineering or technology areas, and must be qualified for a PhD study at NTNU.

Further information can be obtained by contacting Professor Ole Jørgen Nydal, email: ole.j.nydal@ntnu.no.

Conditions of appointment:
PhD students follow code 1017, grade 43 – 47, gross NOK 325 600 to NOK 348 900 per year (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 43. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges. The goal of each of the announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicant’s plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. A contract of employment will be set up for the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government’s policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. Persons with immigrant background and women are encouraged to apply.

The application must contain information of educational background and work experience. Copies of transcripts and reference letters should be enclosed.

An application inclusive CV, grade transcripts and
other enclosures should be sent electronically through
http://www.jobbnorge.no, ref.no. IVT-05/08. Preferably, we want the
attachments in one file. Application deadline: 1 March 2008.
