Its people are Southeast Asia’s most potent force for progress. Hence, agricultural human resource development has been SEARCA’s primary goal since its establishment. SEARCA is one of the "centers of excellence" established by SEAMEO. As such, SEARCA assists SEAMEO member countries in producing highly trained human resources in agriculture and related sciences to accelerate agricultural and rural development in Southeast Asia.

Two of SEARCA's activities that carry out this mandate are the Graduate Study Program and the University Consortium. Both activities are handled by the Graduate Scholarship Department (GSD).

This degree scholarship was initiated in academic year 1968-69 and aims to ensure the relevance and responsiveness of Southeast Asia's agricultural scientists and professionals to global sustainable development issues.

The program provides support for advanced studies leading to the MS and PhD degrees in agriculture, forestry, and related fields. Thus, SEARCA aims to prepare grantees for positions of leadership in developing economies of SEAMEO member countries.

Ph.D. Studentship Statistical methods in the economic evaluation of health interventions

Ph.D. Studentship, October 2010 start:

>> Statistical methods in the economic evaluation of health interventions <<

We have one three or four-year studentship joint funded by the MRC and the University of Bristol, to allow study of statistical methods in the economic evaluation of health interventions.

Two possible projects, to be supervised by Drs Chris Metcalfe & Will Hollingworth:

[1] The net benefit regression framework for estimating cost effectiveness in randomised controlled trials.

Incremental net benefit is a measure of cost-effectiveness that can be estimated using standard regression models. Consequently there is the potential to take those statistical methods developed within the regression framework and apply them to cost-effectiveness analysis. For example, it may be possible to obtain an unbiased estimate of cost-effectiveness in those patients who adhere to their allocated treatment, and to obtain accurate standard errors for data collected in cluster randomised trials.

[2] Optimising the statistical precision of economic evaluations conducted alongside randomised controlled trials.

The sample sizes of randomised controlled trials are almost always based on achieving statistical power for comparisons of clinical outcome rather than comparisons of cost-effectiveness. It is often assumed that randomised controlled trials are severely underpowered on economic outcomes, but there is little empirical evidence to substantiate this. Potential elements of this project include a post hoc examination of statistical power to detect an important difference in cost-effectiveness in published trials, and a prospective study predicting statistical precision in cost-effectiveness estimates based on pilot cost-effectiveness data.
The successful applicant will be based at the School of Social and Community Medicine at the University of Bristol, and will work within the MRC funded ConDuCT hub for clinical trials methodology research. The four-year studentship allows a year of training in clinical trials research for a student moving from a different area of application.

For more details and the application procedure please see the ConDuCT Ph.D. programme prospectus, available under “Other funding opportunities” on our postgraduate opportunities web page:

Please get your application to us by Tuesday 6th July to ensure an October 2010 start. Later applications will be considered if the studentship is still available.

The National Humanities Center will award nearly $1,300,000 in individual fellowship grants to enable scholars to take leave from their normal academic duties and pursue research at the Center. This funding is made possible by the Center's endowment, by grants from the Florence Gould Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and by contributions from alumni of the Center.

The National Humanities Center, located in the Research Triangle Park of North Carolina, is a privately incorporated independent institute for advanced study in the humanities. Since 1978 the Center has awarded fellowships to scholars in the humanities, whose work at the Center has resulted in the publication of more than 1,200 books in all fields of humanistic study. The Center also sponsors programs to strengthen the teaching of the humanities in secondary and higher education.

Scholarship Awards to attend a M.Sc. Degree in Renewable Energy Science in Iceland

RES | the School for Renewable Energy Science in Iceland is now accepting applications for its one year (90 ECTS credits) international M.Sc. Degree Program in Renewable Energy Science, for the academic year 2011-2012.

The RES Program will in February 2011 complete its third year of operation when 49 masters degree students from twelve different countries will graduate. The students this year are specializing in four different fields, namely Geothermal Energy, Hydropower, Fuel Cell Systems & Hydrogen, and Energy Systems & Policies. RES also offers a specialization in Biofuels & Bioenergy. In the near future the school will as well offer specializations in Wind & Wave Power and in Solar Energy in cooperation with foreign partner universities.

RES is a private institution of higher learning, a graduate school, affiliated with the University of Iceland in Reykjavik and the University of Akureyri in North-Iceland.
RES is seeking limited number of highly qualified students to enroll in the M.Sc. Degree Program. A number of Scholarship Awards are also available for outstanding students, including e8 Scholarships and RES tuition fee waiver.

We would appreciate if you could kindly discuss our M.Sc. Degree Program details and scholarship opportunities with some of your top students interested in pursuing a degree in renewable energy in Iceland. Currently 81% of primary energy in Iceland comes from renewable energy sources, highest of any nation. Essentially 100% of electricity generation in Iceland is already from renewable energy sources and over 99% of space heating. Therefore Iceland is a good example for other nations to follow on their route to a more sustainable energy future.
RES is also looking to further expand co-operation with leading international universities, as academic and research partners for the M.Sc. Degree Program, but equally so for the RES Summer School, RES Executive School, and as new partners for our RESnet Network (for more information visit: www.res.is ). If your university is interested in establishing such a partnership with us (e.g., initially with a MOU) we would like to hear from you.

For more details about RES and the M.Sc. Degree Program please see my attached letter with this email.

Please feel free to contact the Rectors Office at rector@res.is for further information, or visit our RES homepage at www.res.is

Netherlands Fellowship Programmes

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are demand-driven fellowship programmes designed to promote capacity building within organizations in 61 developing countries by providing training and education to their mid-career staff members. The NFP is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the development cooperation budget.

Half of the available fellowships should be awarded to female candidates and half of the budget should be spent on candidates from sub-Saharan Africa. Apart from this, priority is given to candidates from priority groups and/or from marginalized regions to be defined by the embassies.

The need for education and training must be linked to the institutional development of the organization the applicants are working for. This means that applicants must be nominated by their employers. In fact, applications without the support of an employer will not be considered.

Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP)

* Fellowships for master’s degree programmes
* Fellowships for short courses
* Fellowships for PhD studies

NFP master’s, NFP short courses and NFP PhD studies award fellowships to individuals. NFP also finances refresher courses for NFP alumni who would like to prolong the effect of earlier learning and update their knowledge and skills.

Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education (SIU) Scholarship

The Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education (SIU) is an administrative agency under the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research (KD), with its own Board of Directors. SIU is located in Norway's second largest city, Bergen.

SIU is a knowledge- and service organisation with the mission of promoting and facilitating cooperation, standardisation, mobility, and the overcoming of cultural barriers to communication and exchange within the realm of higher education on an international level.

The goal of the Quota Scheme is to give students from developing countries in the South, Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia, relevant education that would also benefit their home countries when they return after graduation.

The programme also contributes to strengthen Norwegian institutions of higher education's participation in global knowledge cooperation.

The Norwegian government provides scholarships for students from developing countries in the South and countries of Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia under the Quota Scheme. The overall objective of the Quota Scheme is to promote the internationalisatio n of higher education.

Today, the scheme provides funding for a total of 1100 students, 800 of them from developing countries in the South and 300 from Central- and East-Europe and Central-Asia.

Each year universities and university colleges in Norway are allocated a certain number of quota students. Most of the universities and university colleges in Norway offer courses and educational programmes in English. The scheme normally includes courses at the Master and Ph.D. level, in addition to certain professional degrees. In order to locate a programme eligible under the scheme, please contact the Norwegian institutions directly.

Scholarships
The Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund ( Statens Lånekasse) is responsible for managing the financial support provided for the Quota students. Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme. About 30 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 70 per cent as a loan. However, the loan portion is waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study. Normally, the financial support will not not exceed a time span of four years for one definite study plan, or a combination of two programmes.
