Senior Research Associate or Research Associate in Medical Statistics

Senior Research Associate or Research Associate in Medical Statistics

Mathematics & Statistics
Salary:   £25,251 to £35,938
Closing Date:   Monday 15 October 2012
Interview Date:   Wednesday 07 November 2012
Reference:  A497
This research position arises as part of the Roche Postdoc Fellowship Programme, and is funded for two years in the first instance.  The problem to be addressed is that of finding better, faster and cheaper ways to conduct Multiple Ascending Dose (MAD) trials using Bayesian adaptive designs in combination with other emerging approaches to clinical studies. This research will bring together the long-standing expertise in clinical trial design at Lancaster University and the Roche experience (in the department of Biostatistics and Clinical Pharmacology) in the conduct of MAD trials in early drug development. The collaboration is expected to lead to significant improvements in the way that early clinical development is performed, leading to faster and more efficient identification of beneficial medical treatments.  The project will involve the conventional analysis of data on three or four recently completed MAD studies, followed by the development of novel approaches and their evaluation via simulation.
You should have completed a PhD in statistics no more than 5 years prior to appointment and must have experience of statistical programming using software such as SAS and R.  Experience in statistics methods for clinical trials, Bayesian statistics and trial simulations are desirable, but training on these aspects of the job can be provided.

Starting date: 1 January 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Post-Doctoral and Graduate Positions Available (Montana Univ)

Post-Doctoral and Graduate Positions Available in Disease Ecology and Integrated Management of Vector-Transmitted Cereal Viruses

Project summary: In the western Great Plains Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), Wheat mosaic virus (WMoV), and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV) are serious diseases of winter wheat transmitted by the same mite vector, the wheat curl mite. Management of these mite-transmitted diseases relies upon understanding abiotic and biotic factors that drive survival and spread of the vector and pathogen as there are no chemical controls options and multiple non-crop species can serve as reservoirs for vector/virus. Although managing green bridge hosts and planting dates are important tools to mitigate disease risk, the effect of environmental and biological variables on mite and virus population dynamics is inadequately understood; negatively impacting the potential for successful incorporation of these management tools.
We are recruiting candidates for one PhD and one Post-Doctoral position to quantify risk of disease incidence and severity factors across the biological and environmental variability seen in the Great Plains. Results will improve our understanding on the factors conditioning the spread and impact of vector-transmitted cereal viruses as well as approaches to mitigate them.

Location: Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana. MSU is one of the top mid- sized research institutions located in the heart of the Big Sky country. Bozeman was ranked 5th on Outside magazine’s “40 Best College Towns” and the surrounding area offers access to Yellowstone NP and some of the best fly-fishing, hiking, rafting, and skiing in America. For more details visit http://www.montana.edu/wwwnss/thebest.shtml.

Application. Successful candidates will be members of a vibrant, interdisciplinary team of researchers on plant pathology and agro-ecology. Candidates must hold an appropriate degree in ecology, agroecology, or plant pathology. Excellent work ethic, team player, and proficiency in English language (written and oral) are required. Submit 1) Name of the position to which you are applying, 2) Letter of application describing career goals and research interests, 3) Resume, transcripts, and 4) Names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of three references. GRE and TOEFL scores (if required) are mandatory.

Electronic applications are accepted. Applications should be sent to: Dr. Fabian Menalled. menalled@montana.edu. (406) 994-4783

PhD Position in Medical Image Analysis, University of Basel, Switzerland

PhD Student Position in Medical Image Analysis
"Soft-Tissue Segmentation"

Within the scope of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) for Computer Aided and Image Guided Interventions (CO-ME) the Medical Image Analysis Center (MIAC) at the University of Basel is developing methods to segment facial soft tissue.

The available challenging PhD position is part of a larger multidisciplinary project in the field of cranio maxillo facial (CMF) surgery planning. The project involves both theoretical and applied research aspects, and will be performed in close collaboration with researchers of multiple Universities in Switzerland and the MR physics group at the University Hospital in Basel in particular.

The state-of-the-art methods for segmenting anatomical structures in the head for CMF surgery planning require lot of manual intervention and is a time-consuming task. The focus of this work will thus be on automising this tedious manual segmentation task as much as possible. The problem will be addressed by using a model-based segmentation approach combined with optimised MR sequences. These MR sequences are developed in close collaboration with a PhD student from the MR physics group.

This project will be supported by top clinicians in the area. The candidate must have strong communication skills, the ability to combine basic research activities with the needs of clinicians and be willing to work in a clinical environment.

We are looking for a motivated, proactive person with a background in computer science, biomedical engineering, physics, mathematics or other related field. The candidate will have solid programming skills, as well as a good background in general engineering mathematics. A MSc degree or comparable previous experience is required to join the PhD program at our University.

Interested candidates should send their resumes with references and school transcripts to:

PhD Position in Medical Image Analysis, University of Basel, Switzerland

PhD Student Position in Medical Image Analysis
"Motion Compensation in MRgHIFU"

Within the scope of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) the Medical Image Analysis Center (MIAC) at the University of Basel is developing methods for organ motion compensation in high-frequency focused ultrasound (HIFU).

The available challenging PhD position is part of a multidisciplinary project in the field of liver ablation using HIFU. The project involves both theoretical and applied research aspects, and will be performed in close collaboration with researchers of the University Hospital in Basel (UHBS) and University Hospital in Geneva (HUGE).

Focused ultrasound is a tumour treatment method of the future, and has the unique capability to deposit sharply localised energy deep into the tissues producing thermal tumour ablation. Today's phased array transducers not only achieve a targeting accuracy in the range of millimetres but also allow complete electronic control over the ultrasound field that can not be achieved by any other means for tumour treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging, on the other hand, offers excellent anatomic delineation of the tumours and measures functional changes such as blood flow alteration. In addition, MRI provides excellent capabilities for spatial guidance and on line control of the therapy in particular the ablation temperature with MR thermometry.

The focus of this work will be on developing methods for focal spot locking on a moving liver. For this, the 4-dimensional (3D+time) motion of the liver will be determined using a modification of our unique 4DMRI approach. The main challenge of this project is to fuse advanced imaging techniques and fast image analysis to achieve a closed loop organ motion compensation system.
