Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative

Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative
Unorthodox thinking is essential to overcoming the most persistent challenges in global health. Vaccines were first developed over 200 years ago because revolutionary thinkers took an entirely new approach to preventing disease. Grand Challenges Explorations fosters innovation in global health research. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $100 million to encourage scientists worldwide to expand the pipeline of ideas to fight our greatest health challenges. Launched in 2008, Grand Challenge Explorations grants have already been awarded to 262 researchers from 30 countries. Open to All Disciplines: Anyone Can Apply
The grant program is open to anyone from any discipline, from student to tenured professor, and from any organization – colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies.

Agile, Accelerated Grant-Making
The initiative uses an agile, accelerated grant-making process with short two-page applications and no preliminary data required. Applications are submitted online, and winning grants are chosen approximately 4 months from the submission deadline. Initial grants of $100,000 are awarded two times a year. Successful projects have the opportunity to receive a follow-on grant of up to $1 million.
How Grand Challenges Explorations Grants are Selected

Grand Challenges Explorations is a unique initiative that supports innovative research of unorthodox ideas. Every aspect of the program, including the carefully designed topics describing critical scientific barriers to progress in global health, the two-page online application, and the rapid review process, are designed to swiftly award funding to scientists who are testing unproven ideas that could lead to breakthroughs in global health.

As part of an initial review by internal staff, proposals are screened to ensure that they address the scientific barrier described in a topic. Applications that are disqualified at this stage from further review include those that are outside the scope of the topic; those that focus on ideas specifically excluded in the topic description; or those that do not describe a clear and testable hypothesis.
The second step in the review process is among the most unique in scientific grant programs. Our approach to identifying truly creative ideas and novel approaches requires a panel of reviewers with broad expertise and experience in discovering inventive approaches to daunting issues. All applications are sent to the reviewers without applicant details or organizational information.

Proposals are evaluated by some of the world’s leading innovative minds, who are each empowered to select one to two proposals he/she finds most pioneering based on the creativity of the idea and the experimental plan described in the proposal. No consensus is needed for an idea to be awarded a Grand Challenges Explorations grant – it simply needs to be championed by one of these reviewers.
The final step in the review is a rapid due diligence evaluation to ensure that the investigator and institution have the basic institutional capacity to receive the grant and perform the work described.

* Diploma: Master in Geology; Master in Physical Land Resources; Master in
Bioscience Engineering, or an equivalent degree; second year Master students in
above mentioned disciplines may also apply
* Occupancy rate: 100%
* Vacancy type: Research staff
Description
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated candidate, with interest in
fundamental research on soil-forming processes in the humid tropics, based on field
work and laboratory analyses, who is willing to prepare a PhD in the framework of
the research project "Impact of termites on the mineral, textural and molecular
organic composition of tropical soils" (FWO-Flanders).
Description of the project:
The project is a multidisciplinary study of termite mounds and deep soil profiles
below and around these constructions, focussing on changes in textural,
mineralogical and chemical properties, and on the molecular composition of organic
material. The study area is the Lubumbashi region of Katanga, DR Congo.
The specific research questions for the study of the mineral components concern the
origin of the termite mound material, verifying to what extent they are composed of
strongly weathered material from shallow depths and of less weathered material from
the saprolite zone. Other aspects are the influence of termite activity on the
mineralogical and chemical composition of the clay fraction, on the microstructure
of termite mounds and surrounding soils, and on dynamic characteristics such as the
exchangeable cations. For all these research questions, the influence of the parent
material is assessed.
As part of the study of the molecular composition of the organic fraction, the
origin, degradation, stabilisation and concentration of the OM within the termite
mounds will be studied. The possible functional link between the presence of
specific termite species, the molecular characteristics of the available OM, and the
microbial community structure, as well as the N-supply capacity and greenhouse gas
production by termite mound material in savannah and forest ecosystems will also be
examined.

Post-Doc in Biochemistry or Biological Sciences in Dijon, France

The INSERM U866 Research Centre “Lipids, Nutrition, Cancer”

has an open position for

a Post-Doc

(PhD in Biochemistry or Biological Sciences)

For a transversal project in the INSERM Research Centre to improve the outcome

of cancer therapy by testing new potential treatments against human tumors (colon,

and breast cancer) with high level of efficacy and low toxicity.

Despite aggressive therapies, resistance of many tumors to established treatment

procedures still constitutes a major problem in cancer therapy. For example, the

therapeutic strategy of colorectal cancer is mainly based on surgery and a palliative

chemotherapy with 5-FU/folinic acid associated with Irinotecan.

However this strategy is not very successful, mainly due to establishment of a strong

resistance of cancer cells against the cytotoxic drugs, and to metastatic invasion.

The overall aim of the proposed transversal project in the INSERM U866 Unit “Lipids,

Nutrition, Cancer” is to evaluate: 1) the effect of polyphenols and new chemicals

analogues on the tumor cell plasma membrane, 2) and to determine novel cellular targets

in the cellular lipid metabolism which is implicated in the chemotherapeutic response and

in the Multi-Drug Resistance.

Disciplines: Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology

This project is part of a large scale program involving several teams in the INSERM Unit

Beside basis support from INSERM and French Ministery of research, this program is

supported by the “Conseil Régional de Bourgogne”, the vitivinicultural sector, the NACre

(Nutrition-Food Cancer research) network, the “Cancer League” (Côte d'Or committee) and

INCa (National Cancer Institute and Easter France Cancer cluster).

This position will be available in September-October 2010

and offers a competitive salary (2,500 euros per month).

General information on the INSERM U866 Research Center is available at:

post-doctoral position Mechanosensitive channels

A 2-years post-doctoral position

Mechanosensitive channels

A 24-month post-doctoral position in the area of ion channel physiology funded by the French

National Research Agency (ANR) is available starting April 2010. The host group “Membrane

Transporters and Signalling” (http://www.isv.cnrs-gif.fr/veranglais/research/hbba/hbba.html)

belong to the "Institut des Sciences du Végétal" (ISV) located on the CNRS campus of Gif sur

Yvette, at 30 km south west of Paris.

Although plants respond to a wide variety of mechanical stimuli, and many mechanosensitive

channel activities have been characterized in plant membranes using the patch-clamp method, the

molecular nature of mechanoperception in plant systems has remained elusive. We recently showed

that the MSL9 and MSL10 proteins relatives of the E. coli MscS (Mechanosensitive channel of

Small conductance) might function cooperatively and provide mechanosensitive channel activities

at the plasma membrane of Arabidopsis root cells (Curr. Biol., 18: 730-734, 2008; Plant Signaling

& Behavior, 3: 726-729, 2008).

The first objective of the project is to characterize the electrophysiological properties of MSL9,

MSL10 and other members of the MSL family (homologous system and bilayer). This part will be

done in close collaboration with A. Ghazi 's lab (IBBMC, Orsay). The second objective will be to

enlighten the functions of the MSL channels as sensor of vibrations in aerial part of the plant. This

will be conducted by a multidisciplinary approach involving, electrophysiology, molecular biology

and modelling in cooperation with other partners of the project.

Salary ~ 2000€/month

Applicants should hold a PhD and have preferably an experience in electrophysiology and,

possibly, in molecular biology. A background in plant biology would be an added value but is not

required. English but not French is required.

Candidates should send a CV with a brief summary of research experience, a list of publications

and the names and addresses of 3 contact information referees to Jean-Marie Frachisse

(frachisse@...). Continue Reading...

PhD position for Indonesian candidates at Wageningen University, the Netherlands

Ph.D. POSITION, Plant Production Systems in "JARAK: the commoditization of an
alternative biofuel crop in Indonesia" at the Plant Production Systems Group and
Agrosystems Research Department of Plant Research International, part of
Wageningen University and Research Centre, the Netherlands in cooperation with
the Research Center for Natural Resources and Biotechnology (IPB), Bogor
Agricultural University, Indonesia.

Title PhD Project:
Growth, development and production of Jatropha curcas in Indonesia.

Description

Although heavily promoted for its many advantageous properties, there is little
scientifically-sound information available on the growth, development and
production of the Jatropha curcas under different environmental circumstances
and in different production systems. As it is essentially a wild species lacking
clearly distinguished varieties, the use of different jatropha accessions gives
a wide variety of growth and development patterns, leading to unpredictable
growth and yields, and sometimes unwanted situations. This is caused by the
complex interactions between Genotype (G) x Environment (E) x Management (M),
which must be unraveled to fully understand the production potentials in order
to understand the true value and applicability of jatropha in different
production systems. The different environmental and socio-economic settings
determine the (design of) optimal production systems for jatropha, and govern
the efficiency of resource use
(radiation, water, soil fertility). The aims of this PhD research are the
acquirement of those plant parameters that describe growth and development
patterns of jatropha production systems in Indonesia and to optimize seed yield
per unit of land and/or unit of labour in specific production systems.

Starting date: ASAP after recruitment latest 1st August 2010.

Background
This is a PhD position in the program "JARAK: the commoditization of an
alternative biofuel crop in Indonesia". The program comprises research on

broader research program funded by NWO and KNAW on “Agriculture beyond
Food”. The program includes 6 projects carried out by four PhD researchers and
two Post-Doc researchers from Indonesia and the Netherlands. JARAK is an
interdisciplinary research program of 5 Dutch academic institutes with their
