India Scholarships for Under Graduate, Graduate, Phd, and PostDoc in all subject

International Students Division

Studying in India

From time immemorial, India has been a centre for learning. Thousands of years ago, great scholars used to teach through the scriptures. A variety of subjects such as philosophy, religion, medicine, literature, drama and arts, astrology, mathematics and sociology were taught and masterpieces on these subjects were written. Under the Buddhist influence, education was available to virtually everyone who wanted it and some world famous institutions arose out of the monasteries, such as Nalanda, Vikramshila and Takshashila. Nalanda, which flourished from the 5th to 13th century AD, was especially noteworthy. It had at one time about 10,000 resident students and teachers on its roll, including Chinese, Sri Lankan, Korean and other international scholars.

During the 11th century, the Muslims established elementary and secondary schools, "Madrasas" or colleges, and even universities at cities like Delhi, Lucknow and Allahabad, mostly using Arabic as the medium of instruction. During the medieval period, there was excellent interaction between Indian and Islamic traditions in all fields of knowledge like indology, religion, philosophy, fine arts, painting, architecture, mathematics, medicine and astronomy.

With the arrival of the British, English education came into being with the help of the European missionaries. In 1817, Hindu College was established in Kolkata. The Elphinstone Institution was set up in 1834 in Mumbai. In 1857 three universities were set up at Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai. Since then, Western education has made steady advances in the country. With 354 universities and thousands of colleges affiliated to them, 428 engineering colleges and technological institutes, more than a 100 medical colleges, scores of agricultural institutes and many other specialised centres of learning and research in every subject and discipline, India can claim its position as one of the leading countries providing quality higher education to its people as well as to students and scholars from countries all over the world.

Economics and Social Sciences

Economics and Social Sciences
DIW Berlin - Graduate Center of Economic and Social Research

The Graduate Center of Economic and Social Research at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) welcomes applications from highly qualified post-graduated students from all over the world to attend its structured doctoral training program in economics and social sciences.

Applicants must hold a MA degree or a diploma in economics, business and administration or social sciences in order to apply. Degrees from other related fields (such as civil engineering or statistics) also fulfil the admission requirements of the program. Students with a degree in economics follow the economic track that leads to a PhD in economics; students with a degree in sociology follow a social science track which leads to a PhD in sociology. There is a number of core courses that both groups of students will attend.

The German Institute of Economic Research DIW Berlin is one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany. We are an independent, non-profit institute involved in economic research, service and policy advice. We co-operate closely with universities in Berlin and Brandenburg and in international academic networks.

The goal of Graduate Center's activities is to provide outstanding doctoral students with a research environment and a training structure that will develop their talents in an accordingly exemplary manner. It leads them to a deep understanding of economic and social processes and offers them the opportunity to apply their knowledge within the professional research environment of one of the leading economic think tanks in Germany. The 3-year program follows a dual training approach. It offers

* high-level core and field courses in the first year
* one research internship in Berlin
* a three month stay in Washington DC including advanced courses by US-based scholars and research activities at international renowned think tanks
* on-the-job training within research projects of the DIW Berlin in the 2. and 3. year.

After successfully finishing the programme students have submitted a number of papers to refereed scientific journals. They will receive a certificate confirming participation together with a doctoral degree.

The Graduate Center offers a scholarship of €1000 per month in the first year to each doctoral student admitted. After successful completion of the first year the doctoral students are assigned to the research departments of the Institute. Research positions are offered depending on the volume of research projects under work.

PhD Scholarships in Offshore Wind Energy

Two PhD scholarships are available at DTU Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark in the field of offshore wind energy. The department has a well-proven research tradition in wind energy. The department is strongly involved in ocean energy research through the Statkraft Ocean Energy Research Program, a collaboration between Statkraft AS, DTU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and University of Uppsala. The two scholarships are supported by Statkaft AS through this programme.

Starting date is 1 April 2010.

Project 1: Wake Effects in Wind FarmsAn existing CFD model for studying three-dimensional flow fields and wake effects in wind farms will be further developed. Computations will be carried out for flows about blades of modern wind turbines clustered in farms. The computing code will be validated against existing measurements from both laboratory and field measurements. The computations are expected to give detailed information about basic features of wind turbine wakes, including turbulence properties and vortex structures, and used to clarify the influence of wake effects when air flow is passing by a row of wind turbines. The model serves in particular to analyze and verify the validity of the basic assumptions employed in the simple engineering models. Furthermore, the results may aid in achieving optimal designs of rotors as well as in the establishment and planning of wind parks.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Strong skills in scientific computing, fluid mechanics, applied mathematics and C/Fortran/Matlab programming are required as well as a keen interest in offshore wind energy. Documented knowledge or experience within wind energy and/or offshore engineering will be considered as an advantage.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

Further information may be obtained from Henrik Bredmose, tel: +45 4525 4315 (fatigue) and Jens Nørkær Sørensen, tel: +45 4525 4314 (wake effects). You can read more about DTU Mechanical Engineering on www.mek.dtu.dk.

Application

We must have your online application by 28 January 2009. The application should be no more than 2 pages long and you must indicate which of the scholarships you apply for and how you expect to contribute to the project.Apply online at www.dtu.dk/vacancy.
