The Department of European Ethnology and the Collaborative Research Unit 640, "Changing Representations of Social Order: Intertemporal and Intercultural Comparisons" at Humboldt-University Berlin offer a PhD position within the research project "Kinship as Representation of Social Order and Practice: Knowledge, Performativity and Legal-Ethical Regulation" (Project C4, Stefan Beck and Michi Knecht) This project seeks to understand how notions and practices of kinship / affinity /togetherness are changing in relation to the appropriation of assisting reproductive technologies and adoption in Berlin and Istanbul/Izmir, with a particular focus on the emergent transnational scapes of reproductive medicine. The position is for 4 years, open as soon as possible, ending June 30th, 2012.

The PhD position will contribute to the Turkish and transnational part of the project directed by Prof. Stefan Beck and Dr. Michi Knecht. The focus will be on women, couples and kinship networks, who are using – or have used – reproductive technologies or adoption in order to start, to enlarge or complete families. Important sites of fieldwork in Istanbul, Izmir and Berlin will be self-help groups and other concerned groups within the reproductive health sector, infertility clinics, adoption agencies, ethic committees and governmental staff and experts engaged in redefining kinship and kinship law. Most importantly, interviews and participant observation will take place within the everyday life of families who are involved in our long term study.

Applicants are expected to develop, define and carry through their own PhD research project within the research field of our project (assisting reproductive technologies in Turkey and the emergent transnational scapes of reproductive medicine, kinship and citizenship, concerned groups / self help groups in the field of infertility treatment, adoption, bioethics and regulation in the field of reproductive technologies in Turkey) Applicants for this PhD position should have a background in social / cultural anthropology, european ethnology or STS. 2 DPhil positions -- Sustainability

Two Doctoral Studentships at SPRU on ‘Transitions to Sustainability’
SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research) at the University of Sussex is pleased to offer two DPhil positions, available to start in October 2008.

The two doctoral positions are part of a larger research programme led by Professor Frank W Geels and funded under a prestigious first round grant from the European Research Council.

The title of the research programme is: ‘Destabilisation of sociotechnical regimes as the key to transitions towards sustainability’. This refers to the important emerging field of study concerning non-incremental changes in transport, energy and food systems necessary in order to achieve more sustainable societies – a field in which Professor Geels is a leading figure.

The theoretical framework for the programme involves an exploration of the mechanisms and conditions under which existing systems or regimes become unstable. This may partly be as a result of external pressure (from policy makers or civil society), or partly because of changing beliefs of industry actors. The research programme is multi-disciplinary and will combine insights from sociology of technology, neo-institutional theory, and evolutionary economics. Empirical work focuses on the coal industry, car industry and (pig) farming industry, using case studies as the main method.

The doctoral students will be expected to work as a key element of the research programme under the personal supervision and direction of Professor Geels. Their contributions will be intrinsic to achieving the theoretical and empirical goals as specified in the awarded research proposal. This is available at http://www.sussex.ac.uk/spru/1-2-2.html.

The successful applicants will receive a salary of ₤21,050 per year over a period of forty-two months. During this period, the salary will be subject to standard incremental advancement. This compares favourably with the level of remuneration and three year funding period that is normal for doctoral positions, thus giving additional funded time for completion of the thesis and preparation of publications. The project budget also includes provision for appropriate travel and a computer. The successful applicant will need to pay the standard applicable student fees.

We are looking for excellent applicants, who meet the following criteria:

They have completed a master in sociology of technology (STS), neo-institutional theory, evolutionary economics or organization/business studies.

Applicants should be excellent, and are invited to provide indications for this (e.g. high grades, won prizes, published articles, recommendations) and their suitability for the project.

Demonstrable affinity or experience with the issue of sustainability and the domains of transport, energy/coal, or agriculture is preferable.

Applications are invited for six PhD studentships at the Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS) within the School of Engineering at Cardiff University.

In order to meet the UK government target of 10% of electricity supplies from renewable energy by 2010, an aspiration to double this by 2020 and the EU target of 15% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020, the renewable energy sources (RES) and distributed generation (DG) will play a major role in the future.

The integration of RES and DG will pose many research challenges, especially due to changes in the current network operational and control strategies and dynamic behavior of the network. It is recognised that the future electricity network, both at the transmission and distribution level, can no longer play a passive role. The structure of the network will be highly interconnected with smaller controllable areas, with more responsive demand side loads and DGs. The application of power electronics such as FACTS, HVDC will offer the potential to manage the power flows while enhancing the controllability of the network under dynamic operating conditions. The estimation of the state of the entire and/or controllable areas of the network and coordinate control of these areas will become essential tools.

Recognising the anticipated changes in the future electricity supply system, CIREGS is developing research capacity in integrated renewable energy generation and supply, including “Smart Grids” of the future and contributing towards meeting the UK medium-term renewable energy targets.

The specific PhD projects available are:

The Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) invites applications for one East Asia Postgraduate Research Fellowship to fund three years of doctoral research at the University of Warwick.

This doctoral research will form part of PAIS's programme to consolidate the study of East Asia in the department and across the University. The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Chris Hughes in PAIS. In addition to pursuing their own doctoral research, the holder of the Fellowship will be expected under Professor Hughes's direction to form part of a research team and provide assistance in a range of activities to promote research on East Asia. PAIS has one of the largest concentrations in the UK of research expertise in the contemporary international and domestic East Asian politics.

The successful candidates should have an interest in the international and domestic politics of East Asia, broadly in one or more of the disciplines of Political Science, International Relations, International Political Economy, Security Studies, East Asian Studies, and Japanese Studies. Professor Hughes would particularly welcome applications in his research specialism of Japanese foreign and security policy, but also seeks applications in areas such as Japan-China relations, East Asian regional security more generally, and East Asian regionalism and political economy.

The Fellowship will be highly competitive. Successful candidates should have obtained at least an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) from a recognised institution of higher education before 31 July 2008. The possession of a MA in a relevant discipline would also be an advantage, as would some pre-existing knowledge of East Asia. Applicants should have the requisite standard of English, and some ability in Japanese or another East Asian language would be useful. Home/EU and Overseas students are eligible for the Fellowship.

The scholarship includes for three years:

The Department of Foreign Languages at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim has available 2 PhD positions connected to the research project Exhibiting Europe. The Construction of European Integration and Identity in the Musée de l?Europe funded by the Norwegian Research Council (NFR). This project seeks to understand how ?Europe? and the European Union are represented and constructed in European-level exhibitions, the planned Musée de L?Europe and in selected national (cultural and history) museums throughout Europe. The positions are for 3 years. The starting date is 1 October 2008.

One of the two PhD positions will contribute to the first part-project directed by Dr Stefan Krankenhagen. This will focus on the museums as aesthetic spaces between different cultural fields: Firstly, between its claim of presenting history and its cultural politics of constructing memories and identities. Secondly, between ?encoding? and ?decoding? constructions of Europeaness. And thirdly, between its history as a space of education and its present status as a place of popular ?edutainment? and consumption as its most striking exhibition design. Applicants for this PhD position should ideally have a background in museum studies and/or cultural studies.

The second PhD position will contribute to the part-project directed by Professor Wolfram Kaiser. It seeks to identify whether and how European exhibitions and the Musée de l?Europe represent a cohesive master narrative of EU history, and how national (history) museums have developed and revised their representation of a common European and the EU?s history. Applicants for this PhD position should ideally have a background in contemporary history and/or cultural studies.

Both PhD students will spend their first year at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology where they will have access to research training and, if necessary, relevant (elementary) language courses in Norwegian. The PhD student working with Dr Krankenhagen will spend the second year at Humboldt University Berlin, Germany. Project: Discrimination of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

The emergence of antibiotic resistance in hospital-acquired infections represents a considerable burden to healthcare delivered globally. This research project aims to develop proteomic approaches (including MALDI-TOF-MS) for discrimination and characterisation of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Proteomic techniques, such as two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, will be used to identify biomarkers of antibacterial resistance on the surface of bacterial isolates. Candidates should have a strong interest in bacteriology and molecular biology. Laboratory based practical experience in microbiology, molecular biology and proteomic techniques would be an advantage.

Metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification and catalytic applications – suitable for chemical engineers, chemists, and physicists

Funding is available for two PhD studentships in the School of Engineering and Electronics, University of Edinburgh on two separate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) related projects. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) constitute one of the most exciting developments in recent nanoporous-materials science, with potential applications in many areas, including catalysis, gas separation and storage. The major advantage of MOFs over more traditional porous materials, such as zeolites, is the greater scope for tailoring these materials for specific applications due to their modular synthesis from corner units (generally metal ions or clusters) and linker units (organic molecules able to bridge the metal corners).

Project 1: Metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification

Hydrogen is a potential future automotive fuel as well as an important industrial feedstock. For fuel-cell applications, as well as in many industrial processes, high purity is required. The hydrogen required can be produced either by generating it from steam reforming or methanol cracking processes or by recovering it from hydrogen-rich process streams by adsorbing the impurities using pressure swing adsorption. Such streams are readily available in refineries and petrochemical plants and are sometimes burnt as a waste stream. The scope of this project is to design new adsorbents for hydrogen purification using computational and experimental methods. This is a collaborative project with the Department of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews.

Project 2: Metal-organic frameworks for catalytic applications

To date a large percentage of chiral compounds are synthesised using homogeneous catalysis. Although they are often expensive and their separation/recycling tedious, inefficient and time consuming, homogeneous catalysts often show excellent selectivities and high activities. However there are many advantages to using heterogeneous catalysis, such as easy separation, efficient recycling, minimisation of metal contamination, improved handling that could all result in lower environmental impact and lower overall costs. The aim of this project is to develop chiral heterogeneous catalysts based on MOFs and to study in particular the adsorption and diffusion processes involved. This is a joint project with chemists at the University of East Anglia and the University of Bath.

The studentships
The studentships are available immediately for a period of 4 years (project 1) and 3.5 years (project 2). (They are of different length because the projects themselves have different durations.) The studentships provide a tax-free EPSRC stipend (currently £12,600 per annum), plus university fees at the Home / EU rate. Additional funding is available to cover the overseas fees for non-EU citizens for one of the projects.

For both studentships, collaboration between the chemical engineers at the University of Edinburgh and the partners in chemistry is a very important element and the successful candidates will spend significant periods of time at the partner institutions, learning among other things about material synthesis and characterisation. The ability to be a team player and to work in close collaboration with a team of chemical engineers and chemistry is therefore essential. The successful candidates will have a first class or 2.1 degree, or equivalent, in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics or a related subject.

ASEAN-China Young Entrepreneurs Association

On 8 October 2003 in Bali, Indonesia, the Leaders of ASEAN and China signed Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity. The purpose of the establishment of a strategic partnership for peace and prosperity is to foster friendly relations, mutually beneficial cooperation and good neighbourliness between ASEAN and China. In Joint Declaration, the Leaders of ASEAN and China clearly stated the importance to strengthen cooperation between ASEAN and China in youth.

In 2004, Plan of Action to implement Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity was formulated as guidelines in deepening and broadening ASEAN-China relations and cooperation in a comprehensive and mutually beneficial manner for five years (2005-2010). Plan of Action identified the need to explore the possibility of establishing an ASEAN-China Young Entrepreneurs Forum and to implement ASEAN-China Exchange Programmes for Young Managers and Entrepreneurs.

At the First ASEAN-China Ministerial Meeting on Youth, on 29-30 September 2004, The Ministers Responsible for Youth of ASEAN and China had strengthened their commitments in promoting ASEAN-China Young Entrepreneur cooperation by signing Beijing Declaration on ASEAN-China Cooperation on Youth. Beijing Declaration expressed the commitments of ASEAN and China Leaders to conduct joint actions in order to facilitate access to credit, markets and business development opportunities, including the establishment of institutions, mechanisms and structures, for ASEAN-Chinese young entrepreneurs.

The establishment of ASEAN-China Young Entrepreneurs Association marked as a flagship project to be implemented that will strengthen socio-cultural cooperation between ASEAN and China when ASEAN and China Leaders signed Joint Statement of ASEAN-China Commemorative Summit, on 30 October 2006 in Nanning, China. At the 10th ASEAN-China Summit in Cebu, Philippines, the Leaders of ASEAN and China agreed that the measures in Joint Statement of ASEAN-China Commemorative Summit should be implemented.

In light of this, Brunei Darussalam organized the ASEAN-China Young Entrepreneurs Workshop on 18-20 June 2008. This workshop discussed and considered a concept paper on the setting up of an ASEAN-China Young Entrepreneurs Association, including its modality, objectives, organisational structure, roles and activities, locations, and sources of funding of the proposed action.

At the end of workshop, there were some recommendations which will be presented at the government level and private sector or business community :

n All ASEAN-CHINA member countries agree that there will be the formation of an association of ASEAN-CHINA Young Entrepreneurs

n Proposed Names:

¨ Asean-China Young Entrepreneurs Association

¨ Asean-China Young Entrepreneurs Federation

¨ Asean-China Young Entrepreneurs Alliance

Proposed Governance

n All ASEAN-CHINA member countries agree that the proposed governance for the association will be based on Option 2 as discussed during the workshop

n It was agreed that there will be 1 Co-Chair from ASEAN & 1 Co-Chair from CHINA

n The duration of Chairmanship, is still to be agreed, proposed duration vary between 1 – 3 years

n The Chair from ASEAN will either follow the annual ASEAN rotation or 3 yearly ASEAN-CHINA country coordinator rotation

n Proposed Secretariat has many varying structures, terms & duration, which will need further discussion before the next workshop in Nanning , China .

Proposed Structure

n General consensus amongst ASEAN-CHINA member countries with the following additional proposals:

¨ To include reports/recommendations to go to ASEAN + China Senior Economic Officials Meeting (SEOM MOFCOM)

¨ To include reports/recommendations to the ASEAN + China Senior Officials Meeting on Youth

¨ To include reports/recommendations to go to the ASEAN - China Joint Co-operation Committee Meeting (ACJCC)

Proposed Channels of Communication

n General consensus amongst ASEAN-CHINA member countries with the following additional proposals:

¨ Members of the ASEAN-China Youth Entrepreneurs Association are the national youth entrepreneurs associations or the equivalent organisations (for countries without a formal association in place)

¨ The Association’s members should maintain close communications with the national government agencies responsible for youth entrepreneurship matters

n Proposals discussed during the workshop were as follows:

¨ ASEAN-CHINA Cooperation Fund

¨ Membership fees (for institutions/countries)

¨ Corporate Sponsorship

General consensus in the workshop was that currently this issue needs further discussion

n General consensus during the workshop that the purposed outputs discussed were agreeable, however, certain outputs should be prioritised: Short, Medium, Long Term

Interim Structure

n A Pro-Tem team to coordinate the various proposals that have been raised at this workshop and prepare for recommendation at the next workshop in Nanning , China

n Brunei is volunteering to lead this process on behalf of ASEAN and work together with China to compile all of the relevant information and proposals from this workshop and leading up to the next meeting in China .

PhD Scholarships in Photonics at DTU, Denmark

Nanophotonics for Terabit Communications (NATEC)

A new research centre focusing on nanophotonics for terabit communications is being established at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The centre is based on donations from a private foundation, VILLUM KANN RASNMUSSEN FONDEN. The NATEC centre will, in particular, perform research on light-matter interaction in semiconductor quantum dots and photonic crystal structures and explore the use of such nanostructured materials for realizing photonic chips operating in the terabit regime. The centre is a strongly focused effort involving nanofabrication, experimental characterisation based on nanoscopy and ultrafast lasers, fundamental theory including topology optimization, and systems experiments and will provide ample opportunities for cross-fertilization between these areas.

The NATEC Centre is headed by Professor Jesper Mørk (jm@com.dtu.dk)
from Department of Photonics Engineering, DTU, and involves the
collaboration with 4 other institutes at DTU: Department of Micro-
and Nanotechnology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Center for
Electron Nanoscopy and Danchip.

At the moment we have openings within the following areas of

Growth and characterisation of semiconductor quantum dots and

Two PhD positions at SPRU: Transitions to sustainability

SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research) at the University of Sussex (UK) is pleased to offer two DPhil positions, available to start in October 2008.

The two doctoral positions are part of a larger ERC-funded research programme titled: ‘/Destabilisation of sociotechnical regimes as the key to transitions towards sustainability/’.

The successful applicants will receive a salary of ?21,050 per year over a period of forty-two months. We are looking for excellent applicants, who meet the following criteria:
* They have completed a master in sociology of technology (STS), neo-institutional theory, evolutionary economics or organization/business studies.
* Applicants should be excellent, and are invited to provide indications for this (e.g. high grades, won prizes, published articles, recommendations) and their suitability for the project.
* Demonstrable affinity or experience with the issue of sustainability and the domains of transport, energy/coal, or agriculture is preferable.

Applications are invited from candidates for a PhD studentship on self-motivated learning in robots based on information-theoretical principles.

Project and Requirements:

Based on a class of recently developed information-theoretic techniques and models, the project will study candidate mechanisms for the generation of biologically plausible self-motivated learning and behaviour dynamics for robots. The project will involve the intrinsically driven identification of intelligent behaviours based on informational criteria, and their incremental acquisition, refinement and expansion. The methods will be first developed in simulation and will then ideally be transferred to hardware robots.

The prospective candidates should have a keen interest in contributing to a new and dynamic research area and a strong background in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics or another relevant computational discipline. In particular, they should demonstrate very strong programming skills in one or more major computer languages. A good mathematical/numerical background would be desirable, ideally including probability theory and data modelling/neural network techniques.

Successful candidates may be eligible for a research studentship award from the University (equivalent to £12,940 per annum bursary plus the payment of the standard UK student fees).

The envisaged research will take place in a vibrant and enthusiastic research environment as a part of the Adaptive Systems Research Group in the School of Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire. The university is located in Hatfield, less than 25 minutes by train from London Kings Cross and with convenient access to Stansted, Luton and Heathrow airports and not far from the historic town of St. Albans.
