Darrell Posey Fellowship

Fellowship for Ethnoecology and Traditional Resource Rights Small

Grants Awards and the Field Fellowship, Submitted by Natasha Duarte, isecoordinator@gmail.com

Coordinator, International Society of EthnobiologyIn
2009 we will award two small grants, and one Field Fellowship. In 2011
we will award another two small grants, and possibly an
institution-based fellowship (the latter depends upon available funds).
For more information
on the Program, and to get updates on the work of Fellows and Small
Grants recipients from 2004-2008, please visit us online at: www.ethnobiology.net
Small Grants are awarded to indigenous and community groups working on sustainable and equitable resource management
or rights issues. The incorporation of small grants into the Fellowship
program reflects the widespread need for small, strategic sums to fill
gaps in funding, respond to crises, or catalyze resource management change or institutional development.
Small grants are $5,000 per year for two years. Field
Fellowships are awarded to individuals pursuing applied, on-the-ground
activities to support resource management, and cultural, human, land, resource and other rights of indigenous peoples and local communities around the world.
The award targets grassroots activities and individuals that may or may
not have an interest in academic concerns. Field Fellows receive
$20,000 per year for two years.
Please visit our website to find the instructions for nominating
candidates for both Small Grants and Field Fellowships. You will find
there different requirements for each program, as well as slightly
modified instructions for individuals and groups that wish to apply
directly to the ISE for Small Grants or Field Fellowships. In the past,
only the Oxford Fellowship was awarded through a direct application
process, and Small Grants and Field Fellowships were by nomination
only. This was intended to make the process more inclusive because many
groups and individuals undertaking grassroots work on resource rights
and management, and applied ethnobiological research, are not
experienced fundraisers and do not have large international networks.
However, so many individuals have asked to apply directly for the
Small Grants and Field Fellowships that we decided to accept both
nominations and direct applications (but letters of
support/recommendation will continue to be weighed more heavily than
the style or polish of a proposal). The timeline for this year’s Small
Grants and Fellowship nomination, selection, and award process is as
follows:
February 1, 2009: Proposals and Nominations due

February 1 – March 15, 2009: Selections made

April 1, 2009: Small Grants and Fellowship recipients notified

May 1, 2009: Awards made (the first of two annual payments of $5,000

for small grants, and $20,000 for Fellows).

Master's Degree Program Background

The AUN/SEED-Net Project with support from Japan International
Cooperation Agency (JICA) provides scholarships to highly qualified
young teaching staff and graduating students/young graduates (i.e.,
potential future faculty staff) of Member Institutions to acquire
master's degrees in the following nine engineering fields at
respective Host Institutions in other countries:

* Chemical Engineering (at De La Salle University)
* Civil Engineering (at Chulalongkorn University)

master's degree within two years, AUN/SEED-Net provides vital support,
in terms of financial and academic, through joint thesis research
supervision, to AUN/SEED-Net Master's students at all Host
Institutions. The joint thesis research supervision will be carried
out through the Collaborative Research Program, which has been created
by each Host Institution for a few well-defined research themes (or
research umbrellas) in consultation with Japanese Field Coordinating
University, each of which is a collection of interrelated and
progressively conducted thesis research topics. Each AUN/SEED-Net
student (including doctoral sandwich student) shall conduct thesis
research under one of these research themes.

Besides, according to AUN/SEED-Net Students' Mobility scheme which is
promoted to enable students to benefit educationally and culturally
from the experience of learning at other Member Institution(s),
Master's students may be supported to take a course(s) or conduct
research at other Member Institution(s) for a short period. Students
are advised to consult with their advisors and Host Institution on the
necessity, possibility and procedures of their mobility.

Those who complete this Master's Degree Program with outstanding
thesis research are encouraged to pursue a doctoral degree in one of
the above nine fields either at Japanese Supporting Universities under
the "Doctoral Degree Program in Japan", or at Host Institutions (in
Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand) under the
"Doctoral Degree Sandwich Program" with co-supervision by Japanese
professors, or at the two Singaporean universities (NTU & NUS) under
"Doctoral Degree Program in Singapore" .

Moreover, Master's students who prove outstanding performance and feel
interested in upgrading to doctoral level with maximum scholarship
period of five (5) years could consult with their Host Institution on
the possibility and requirements of being upgraded. Interested
students are advised to inform their Sending Institutions in advance
for their agreement.

Objectives

1. To increase the number of high quality Master's degree holders in
engineering at Member Institutions which would be necessary to
contribute to a sustainable industrial development of ASEAN countries.

2.
To strengthen the Master's degree support at the Host Institutions so
that the production of high quality Master's degree holders in
engineering needed for the region is materialized within the region in
collaboration with the Member Institutions and Japanese Supporting
Universities.

3.
To strengthen human networking among teaching staff of Member
Institutions and Japanese Supporting Universities.

Target Number of Scholarships
Around 45 scholarships for each Japanese Fiscal Year will be
supported (approximately five scholarships for each host field at Host
Institutions in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand).
Coverage of Scholarships
The scholarships cover tuition fees, living expenses, health
insurance, visa fee and airport tax, and a round-trip air ticket, in
accordance with the AUN/SEED-Net Project regulations.
Commencement and Duration of Scholarships

The commencement of scholarship should be within the respective
Japanese Fiscal Year; that is, awarded students should commence their
study within April of the year– March of the next year.

The duration of the scholarship is strictly two years, counting from
the day of arrival at a Host Institution. Students who need more than
two years to acquire a degree will be expected to self-finance during
period of extension.

Note: The AUN/SEED-Net Project, in consultation with the Host
Institution, will terminate the award of any student who fails to
maintain satisfactory progress at the Host Institution.

Scholarship Allocation
Although even distribution across nine fields and across Sending
Institutions are taken into consideration, our scholarship allocation
needs to be based on first-in-first-served policy; that is, depending
on the submission of admission results from Host Institutions.
Submission Deadline of the Application Form

Applications for the Master's Degree Program should be submitted, in
printed forms, to the AUN/SEED-Net Project by February 15 each year. Continue Reading...

PhD Opportunity at Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research

Job opportunity at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine
Research, Department of
Climate Sciences, (starting as soon as possible)
Ph.D. student in combining gravity and ocean data in inverse ocean models
(Entg.Gr. 13/2 TVöD)
Satellite-based gravity observations in combination with sea surface
height
measurements from
satellite altimetry can provide valuable information for estimates of
the ocean circulation. Traditionally
this information is available in a form that is difficult to interpret
in the context of ocean models.
Recently, new earth gravity models have been developed at the
Institute for Geodesy and
Geoinformation of the Bonn University that resolve this issue.
With the German Research Foundation (DFG) priority programme 1257
"Mass transport and mass
distribution
in the system Earth" (http://www.massentransporte.de,
project RIFUGIO), these new
gravity field models will be combined with oceanic observations and
ocean models. One of the goals is
to investigate in process studies, how consistent information from
gravity field modelling is with current
ocean models, and how the new gravity models can contribute to
understanding the ocean circulation.
In close cooperations with members of the partner project at Bonn
University, these insights will be
used to find new estimates of the ocean circulation.
Tasks: Simulations with simple and complex inverse models of the ocean
circulation in close
collaboration with members of the partner project at Bonn University;
preparation and analysis of
observational data.
Requirements: Degree in oceanography, meteorology or physics (or
comparable fields with a sound
physical/mathematic education). A strong background in hydrodynamics,
oceanography and
mathematics is essential; strong interest in numerical studies;
experience with programming
languages
(Fortran) and with large computer architectures;
sufficiently good oral and written English.
The position is limited to three years.
For further information, please contact Dr. M. Losch (Martin.Losch@awi.de).
Severely disabled applicants with essentially identical technical and
personal suitability will be
preferentially selected, please see our notification on our homepage
under job offers / jobs.
AWI specifically encourages female candidates to apply with a view
towards increasing the proportion
of female scientists.
AWI supports balanced work-life career development via a variety of
alternatives.

2 postdoc positions available on megacities and chemical forecasting: Service d'Aeronomie/IPSL (Paris, France)

************************************************************************
2 Post-doctoral research positions available at the
Service d'Aeronomie(IPSL)/ UniversitÈ Paris VI, Paris, France
************************************************************************

Two post-doc positions are available at the Service d'Aeronomie,
in Paris, to work within two international projects funded
by the European Commission. Both projects focus on the chemical
composition of the atmosphere
at the global and regional scales.

The objective of the CITYZEN (MegaCITY Zoom for the ENvironment) project is
to quantify and understand current air pollution distributions and
development in and around selected megacities/hot spot regions, including
the interaction across the different spatial scales and to estimate how
megacities/hot spots may be influencing climate change. The project
involves 13 groups from Europe and Asia; the work performed at
the Service d'Aeronomie will focus on the concentrations and deposition of
air pollutants in megacities over the last decade, the quantification of
export fluxes from megacities, the quantification of past and present
greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions from urban agglomeration areas over
the last two decades and analysis of satellite data.

The goal of the MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate)
project is to develop a forecasting system for atmospheric composition
at the global and regional scales. The project involves 44 groups from
different European countries. The work carried out at the Service
d'Aeronomie concerns the scientific evaluation of the integrated global
forecasting of reactive gases in the troposphere and stratosphere.
It includes an extended evaluation of the model products using
independent data and the analysis of well-defined cases studies.

In both projects, the research will be carried out in close collaboration
with the scientists involved in the other themes of the project, and
the applicant is expected to participate in the scientific meetings
of the projects.

Applications are invited from post-doctoral researchers with a PhD in
environmental sciences or similar experience. Experience in modelling is
desirable together with knowledge of computer programming (Unix, Fortran,
IDL) and english. Both positions are for 3 years. The positions are open
until filled.

If interested please send your CV including email addresses of 3 referees
to claire.granier@aero.jussieu.fr. The Service d'Aeronomie is located
in central Paris at the Jussieu campus (http://www.aero.jussieu.fr).
It is a joint CNRS/University laboratory which is also part of the
Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL). It carries out research into a
wide range of topics related to atmospheric science. Continue Reading...

PhD position The Institute for Coastal Research "Systemanalyse und Modellierung" in Geesthacht (near Hamburg, Germany)

The GKSS Research Centre is located in Geesthacht near Hamburg, Germany,
with a further centre in Teltow near Berlin, and is a member of the
Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (HGF). With its
approximately 800 employees it undertakes, in collaboration with
universities and industry, research and development in the areas of
coastal research, materials research, regenerative medicine, and structure
research with neutrons and synchrotron radiation.

The Institute for Coastal Research "Systemanalyse und Modellierung" in
Geesthacht (near Hamburg, Germany), invites applications for a

PhD position - Code-No. 2009/KS 1

Appointment will begin as soon as possible and will be for three years.

The determination of the initial status of the forecast in numerical
weather forecast is based on the assimilation of observational data. These
data are mainly temperature, wind, and humidity from synoptical weather
stations
, but also atmospheric quantities derived from satellite
measurements become important in recent years. New satellite missions help
to get a more detailed picture of the atmosphere. Also the assimilation
techniques developed further. Presently measured data are not just used to
define the initial state of a weather forecast model, but can also be
assimilated into a the model during run time. This technique is of special
interest in hindcasting, i.e. for long time simulations of past years.

Aim of the PhD thesis to improve the quality of long time hindcast
simulations with a regional climate model by assimilating high resolution
measurements into the model simulations. The main focus is to study the
effect on the regional water cycle. The work is part of the research
network "Earth Observation System" in the Helmholtz association.

We offer an appropriate salary, related to TV-AVH as well as the usual
public sector social benefits. GKSS is an equal opportunity/affirmative
action employer seeking to increase the proportion of female faculty
members. Qualified women are therefore especially encouraged to apply.
Physically handicapped persons will be favoured if they are equally
qualified. The GKSS strongly supports equal opportunities.

Please send your application with our code-No. 2009/KS 1 including CV and
references to GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH, Personalabteilung,
Max-Planck-Str. 1, 21502 Geesthacht or via e-mail to personal@gkss.de.

Call for Application: Green Water Research

http://www.ifs.se/Programme/Announcements/Call_for_applications_GreenWater_2008.pdf

The majority of countries in need of increasing food security are
located in Sub‐Saharan Africa and South‐East Asia. The farmers in many
of these countries, especially in semi‐arid areas, have to cope with
highly variable and unpredictable rainfall, short rainy seasons,
recurrent drought all exacerbated by high evaporation rates. Yet,
agriculture in these areas is essentially rain‐fed. There is of course
scope for using "blue water" (i.e. runoff water, water from rivers,
ground waters, lakes) in these challenged countries but as these
resources are finite and often over‐committed, the exploitation of
other water sources needs to be optimised. Green water is an important
part of the solution to the problem.
More research on green water is necessary
Water from rain suffers losses through run‐off, low infiltration, poor
conditions of root development and soil erosion. Efforts need to be
made to improve the efficiency of rainwater use to deliver more green
water for use by the plants, especially for the benefit of small
farmers in arid and semi‐arid countries. To contribute to achieving
this goal, IFS is making a call for research proposals in this area. Continue Reading...
