LUF Master Degree Scholarship 2009-2010
PhD position in Mathematics at Vilnius Univ, Lithuania
PhD Position
http://www.mif.vu.lt/CAGLab/index.php?id=positions
One full-time PhD position is available at Faculty of Mathematics
and Informatics, Vilnius University (Lithuania) in the framework of
Marie Curie Network SAGA (ShApes, Geometry, and Algebra).
Topic: Mathematics of surfaces with applications to geometric
modeling.
Possible project examples:
Improved blends between primitive surfaces
The majority of mechanical parts in CAD have a boundary
representation that combines planes and primitive surfaces (like
sphere, circular cylinder/cone or torus) with smooth blends between
them. Usually these constructions are only approximate, and the
resulting blends are NURBS surfaces with gaps along boundaries. The
project goal is to construct new efficient smooth blends between
primitive surfaces of reasonable parameterization degree that have
no gaps on the boundaries. The results should be possible to
integrate into industrial CAD systems.
Fair surfacing constructions: filling multisided holes
Current CAD technology is essentially based on NURBS. The natural
modeling process of smooth surfaces with complicated topology
usually generates NURBS with n-sided holes (n not equal to 4).
Several methods were proposed for fair filling of such holes using
rational patches or special polynomial patchworks. The goal is to
find structural representation of such constructions. This may lead
to new kind of splines naturally extending NURBS, and that can
represent/approximate surfaces of arbitrary topology.
Qualifications
Degree: A Bachelor's or equivalent 4-year degree in Mathematics,
Computer Science, or related field is required: it must have been
obtained within 4 years from the start date of the PhD. Possessing
also a Master's degree in a relevant field is an advantage.
Nationality: The candidate cannot be of Lithuanian nationality, and
cannot have resided or worked in Lithuania for more than a year
during the 3 years before the PhD start date.
Languages: Fluency in English is required. Other languages would be
an advantage.
Financial support
Gross salary of about 2380 Euro per month (1400 Euro net), or about
2590 Euro (1520 Euro net) if married (family not necessary comes
together).
Travel allowance to/from country of residence, support for
travelling related to the PhD etc.
Dates and application procedure
Start date: anytime till November, 2009, for 3 years; one semester
will be spent in another SAGA partner.
Application deadline: the earlier the better.
Application procedure: Email your complete CV to
rimvydas (DOT) krasauskas (ETA) mif.vu.lt,
including relevant courses with grades, your Bachelor's/Master's
thesis, any academic publications, and names/addresses of professors
who may provide recommendations.

PhD positions, Biological Sciences, Cross Talk Project, Europe
PhD positions, Biological Sciences, Cross Talk Project, Europe
The Cross Talk project is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, that
brings together 8 academic participants, 2 industrial partners and 3
associated partners. Their association promotes complementarities of
expertise in several scientific research fields, supporting an
early-stage training program.Cross Talk has
the overall objective to achieve major breakthroughs in the
understanding of the mechanisms underlying the dialogue between the
intestinal microbiota and hosts. To reach this aim, Cross Talk will:
• Decipher the molecular mechanisms involved in the microbiota-host recognition
• Reveal how the bacterial signals are integrated by the different players of the mucosal immune system
• Validate the cross-talk mechanisms identified in the previously
described steps in vivo. The expected outputs are new knowledge and
applications for the food and drugs industry.
Cross Talk aims to rise a new generation of young scientists, well
trained to sustain the emergence of metagenomics, a new supra-
discipline calling for competencies in microbiology, cell biology,
immunology, human physiology, high throughput technologies and
bioinformatics. In this respect, Cross Talk will provide individual
training through research projects and organize network meetings,
spring schools and workshops.

EES Master Program LMU Munich
Since 2007 the University of Munich (LMU) offers a 2-year,
international Master program in Evolution, Ecology and Systematics
(EES).
The EES Master program contains many innovative elements such as a
mentoring program, integrated skills courses and individual research
training. We also apply a feedback and revision system instead of
simple grading. All courses are offered in English. Classes are small
and students have a lot of contact to the teachers. Thanks to funding
by the Volkswagen Foundation, students can apply for their own research
and travel money and for money to invite international speakers.
Applications to start in October 2009 are now welcome from highly
motivated students who have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in
biology or a related subject.
Application deadlines: 30th of April (for non-EU students) and 30th of June (for EU-students and others who don’t need a visa to study in Germany).

carbon emissions trading. Qualifications: The successful
multidisciplinary applicant will understand and apply engineering and
economics methodologies as well as remote sensing techniques. The
proposed work will focus on the application of ecological-economics
approach to environmental problem-solving through offering direct
incentives for decreasing the phosphorus level in the runoff using
tradeable emission. The successful applicant will be using laboratory
techniques and computer software for the analysis and modeling of
phosphorus transport through the Northern Everglades. Field trips will
be necessary to investigate the current situation. Economics courses
and interests will be essential for the student. Necessary supervision
(Everglades Foundation and FIU) and training will be given. The
candidate must have a Master Degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemical
engineering or Physical Chemistry with a strong interest in economics
and modeling or other relevant education. The position requires
experience in water quality analysis. The candidate will be enrolled in
the PhD-program at the FIU Faculty of Engineering. The student will be
part of a small and individually supervised group of PhD students and
will have the opportunity to work with senior researchers from the FIU
and from the Everglades Foundation (direct supervision). The student
will receive a fellowship for the three years of studies. The proposed
starting date is September 2009 (flexible). Fellowship application

Description:
Ph.D. position (100%) in Computational analysis of coherence relations in Dutch
(vacancy number AT209075)
University of Groningen, Faculty of Arts
Center for Language and Cognition
The research groups Discourse and Communication and Computational Linguistics
are looking for a Ph.D. student to participate in the NWO-funded research
programme Modelling Textual Organisation (http://www.let.rug.nl/mto). This
programme studies the organisation of text into structural units by means of
coherence (discourse relations between clausal and larger units) and cohesion
(lexico-semantic relations between words in textual units). The programme is
organised around two related Ph.D. projects, focussing on coherence and
cohesion, respectively. Both projects contribute to and then work with an
annotated corpus of expository and persuasive Dutch texts.
We are inviting applications for one of these Ph.D. projects (the other project
is already underway). The successful candidate will study the mechanisms that
are used to establish coherence in Dutch texts by focusing on three
computational research questions:
(1) To what extent can syntactic pre-processing of text contribute to the task
of annotating discourse structure?
(2) To what extent can discourse relations be added to a text automatically?
(3) Does annotation of discourse relations contribute to automatic summarization
of text?

- Master's degree in (Computational) Linguistics, Computer Science, or a related
field
- excellent record of undergraduate and Master's level study
- knowledge of Dutch or the willingness to learn it
- ability to work together with other researchers

result in a Ph.D. dissertation. After the first year there will be an assessment
of the candidates' results and the progress of the project to decide whether the
employment will be continued.
