Phd position in Biostatistics - topic of survival analysis - UCLouvain BE

Starting from September 2009, the Institute of Statistics of the Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, has a vacancy for a PhD student in Biostatistics in the topic of Survival Analysis.

The position is meant to conduct research on frailty models and their application in analysis of data from clinical trials. Despite the fact that frailty models became probably the most popular model to analyse clustered survival data, very little work has been done on the choice of the frailty density. In this project, we would like to investigate further the type of dependence induced by various choices of frailty density, the impact of misspecification of this density, and aim to develop diagnostics and goodness-of-fit tests. This research has direct application to the analysis of data from multicenter survival clinical trials.

Description of the position

As a research assistant (up to 4 years' tax-free monthly grant of about 1500 Euros) the doctoral student's main activity is working on his/her thesis under the supervision of Prof. Catherine Legrand. Apart from conducting research that leads to journal publications and a PhD. thesis, the candidate is expected to follow the program of the Graduate School in Statistics and Actuarial Sciences and he/she can be involved on a small scale into some teaching activities of the IS.

Description of the working environment

The Institute of Statistics is a renowned research centre of high international reputation which offers a very stimulating working environment. It is equipped with modern computing facilities, a statistics library, a vivid visitors' programme and ample funding for scientific travel. They are integrated into the Graduate School in Statistics and Actuarial Sciences which offers them an up-to-date training in their field via regular seminar series, short courses and workshops, all in English and often given by international short and long-term visitors. A high percentage of the PhD students graduate from the IS and succeed in starting a promising career, be it in academia or industry.
The IS is part of a large international research network. It has numerous academic contacts, including those to neighbouring fields (medicine, agronomy, social science, economy, finance and engineering) as well as collaborations with industry. It is placed in the heart of a modern, vivid and international university campus, in close proximity of Brussels and its international airport, and in short travel distance to other European capitals.

Required qualifications

The ideal candidate should have a degree on the master level in (Bio)Statistics or in related field. This diploma must be obtained with at least distinction or an equivalent grade.

PhD position: Stability of confined water layers in hydrophobic nanochannels

The Faculty of Science and Technology (700 faculty members, 1100 students) offers a range of bachelor and master courses (NanoTechnology, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering and Technical Medicine). The faculty’s research is organized in three of the university’s interdisciplinary research institutes: MESA+, MIRA, and IMPACT. These institutes increase the vitality of research by enabling collaboration between programs and disciplines, by providing shared facilities, and by attracting funding for joint projects. They also provide a conduit to industrial and other external partners.

The properties of water in the vicinity of hydrophobic surfaces are at the origin of many important and poorly understood phenomena. They play an crucial role in the solvation of hydrophobic molecules, attractive hydrophobic forces between macroscopic surfaces, the self-assembly of micelles and lipid membranes, and – last not least - in the folding of proteins and in the transport of water and ions through membranes, i.e. in some of the most central processes in living organisms. Despite the relevance of the subject and the enormous amount of work in the field, many fundamental aspects are still controversial. simple estimate based on bulk properties shows that liquid water is thermodynamically unstable between two hydrophobic surfaces for separations of less than approximately 1µm. Nevertheless, confined water layers should remain stable down to a distance of about 1nm. This is generally attributed to excessive nucleation barriers for vaporization.

In this project, we want to study the stability of liquid confined water layers using a new experimental tool, namely hydrophobic nanochannels etched into glass with a thickness ranging from a few up to a few tens of nanometers. A Fabry-Pérot interferometer incorporated into the nanofluidic chip will allow for measuring the refractive index of the fluid in the channel as a function of both time and position. By varying the temperature and pressure we will force the liquid to evaporate and follow the appearance and growth of gas or vapor bubbles for various conditions (dissolved gas; dissolved ions; pH). To obtain additional information about the dynamics of the transition, we will follow temporal fluctuations of the refractive index (with MHz time resolution) as well as global electric properties of the nanochannels.

Requirements

We are looking for a strong and highly motivated PhD student with a background in physics or physical chemistry. The practical work will be primarily experimental, requiring a high level of technical skills regarding high resolution optical measurements, fabrication, and general surface and sample preparation. Physical modeling of the results falls in the realm of thermodynamics of phase transitions and statistical physics.

Conditions of employment

In accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel, the gross salary of a Ph.D. student is € 2,042 in the first year to € 2,612 in the last year.

Applications

For more information and application, please contact Prof. dr. Frieder Mugele (+31-53-489-2106; f.mugele@utwente.nl). Applications should consist of an application/motivation letter as well as detailed CV (resume). Please send you application before Oct 1th 2009. Vacancy number 09/183.

The Electrical Engineering department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) at the University of Twente (UT) is one of the three academic institutions in Electrical Engineering in the Netherlands. The Telecommunication Engineering and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) research group is embedded in the Electrical Engineering department.

The research is part of the multidisciplinary research institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (www.ctit.utwente.nl).

The Telecommunication Engineering and EMC research group of EEMCS/CTIT collaborate with the Technical University Delft in the Embedded Metamaterials/Power Sandwiches project. In this project, we investigate a new approach to construct electronic systems that enables integration of power semiconductors, passive components, EMI filters and countermeasures in a "system in a package" generation of components. The Embedded Metamaterials/Power Sandwich project follows a new design approach and brings together a number of technologies:

- A new SMT-based manufacturing that lends itself for automated assembly.

- Embedded EMI filters and countermeasures (such as non-linear

resistors) in the planar substrates, using a new type of materials:

metamaterials.

- A new family of components that can be sandwiched between planar substrates, such as PCBs.

Two PhD researchers will collaborate. One PhD student will be supervised by Prof. J.A. Ferreira of the Delft University of Technology, the second PhD student will be supervised by Prof. F. Leferink and will do research on embedded EMI countermeasures using metamaterials.

The specific goals of UTwente are:

- Identify new (meta) materials that are suitable for a 3D layer-by-layer construction;

- Investigate the implementation of these materials to counteract EMI, higher reliability and lower cost.

Common goals are:

- Design and optimization from a system integration point of view paying attention to electrical, EMI and thermal performance.

- To get the industry involved in a team effort to come to a better technology platform for power electronics.

This research may result in a breakthrough in conventional way of development and production of electronic circuits. The results should become available within many possible applications. Therefore many industrial entities, small and large, from different areas, are supporting this research. These industrial entities are active in mass consumer production, automotive, high-end professional, as well as production assembly lines.

We are currently looking for a PhD researcher (4 years) who will investigate the application of (new) metamaterials in PCB technology.

You have completed a relevant university degree (MSc level) or are about to graduate in an area that is relevant to our research. You like working in a team and have intellectual curiosity and knowledge of one or more of the described topics. Your main responsibility will be to carry out research, but you will be given the opportunity to acquire some teaching experience.

We offer our PhD researchers the opportunity to broaden their knowledge by joining international exchange programs, by participating in national and international conferences and workshops, and by visiting other research institutes and universities worldwide.

The monthly salary of a PhD researcher, in accordance with the Dutch universities collective labour agreement, ranges from EURO 2042,- gross in the first year to EURO 2612,- gross in the fourth year.
