The HBIGS Heidelberg offers training and excellent research opportunities for outstanding PhD and MD/PhD students from Germany and abroad in a vibrant and stimulating scientific environment. The focus of the Graduate School on molecular and cellular biology takes into account that molecular and cellular biology provides the conceptual and technological foundation on which most other fields, sub-disciplines and specialized areas of life and biosciences rest - from structural biology to bioinformatics, from molecular medicine to biotechnology, and from immunology to systems biology. A higher qualification in molecular and cellular biology will, therefore, prepare graduates for leading positions in all areas where in-depth knowledge of biological processes is required - be it in academia, industry or the public sector.

This is a joint international call for applications to PhD projects offered by HBIGS and the Cluster of Excellence Cellular Networks: From Molecular Mechanisms to Quantitative Understanding of Complex Functions (CellNetworks).
The call will be open from March 18 to May 15, 2008. Only applications submitted via the online application system will be considered. Applications by mail or email will not be eligible.
Students who are eligible to apply have four options:
Option 1. Apply to up to three different projects (read more about the projects...) or
Option 2. Write a project proposal for an interdisciplinary, innovative and original PhD project jointly conducted between two or more research teams from different fields.
HBIGS awards fellowships for research projects integrating molecular and cellular approaches with mathematical modeling, nanotechnology, biophysics including high-resolution microscopy and imaging, chemical genetics, biotechnology, and molecular medicine.
The project proposal should be divided into the following sections:
 Project Title
 Summary
 Background
 Work program
 References
 Preferred HBIGS Research Group
Option 3 (Combines Options 1 and 2). Apply to up to three different projects (read more about the projects...) and write a project proposal for an interdisciplinary, innovative and original PhD project jointly conducted between two or more research teams from different fields.
Option 4 (Fast track option). Only (!) Members of one of the two Masters programs Molecular Biosciences or Molecular Biotechnology at the Faculty of Biosciences at Heidelberg can apply via the "Fast track" option. Please read the admission requirements for more details.
Please note: Applicants who submit their application to more than one option will automatically be excluded from the selection procedure!
