PhD Scholarships - available now
Interoperable Manufacturing Knowledge Systems
Ref: RIMY121108
Dr R Young, Dr J Harding, Prof K Case
We are pleased to have available two Scholarships for PhD students who are interested in working with manufacturing companies that want to explore radically new knowledge sharing solutions to support the capture, sharing, and verification of multiple sources of manufacturing knowledge in complex change environments.
The effective use of computer based tools to support decision making in manufacturing industry is critical to business success. The research will contribute to the understanding of how to apply new, Common Logic based ontological tools to achieve effective sharing of manufacturing knowledge across product life cycle domains within aerospace and automotive manufacturing business worlds. The work will use combinations of design for manufacture, manufacturing planning, assembly and product repair as the set of domains on which to focus the research.
The studentships are available now and would suit candidates of high academic ability with a background related to manufacturing and/or computer science. Ideally candidates will be available to take up the studentship by January 2009 at the latest. The studentships will cover three years of fees and provide a bursary currently valued at £12,940 per year.
Research student 1 - Standardisation of `World Models' for best practice manufacturing knowledge sharing:
The aim here is to identify methods for the definition of libraries of `world' objects, processes and relationships which meet the needs of interoperation in a multi-disciplinary manufacturing knowledge sharing environment.
Research student 2 - Verification methods for knowledge sharing in manufacture
The aim here is to identify rigorous methods for mapping between multiple `world' and `'domain' models that can evaluate and verify the compatibility of knowledge within these models and thereby ensure effective knowledge sharing across multiple domains.
If you interested in for one of these scholarships then please send your details to Dr R Young (R.I.Young@lboro.ac.uk). In addition to your CV please indicate your expected availability and whether you have already applied to Loughborough University to study for a PhD.
Please note that candidates will need to complete the normal university application process before any offer can be made. For an application pack and details of admission requirements, please contact: Ms JR Mason, Research Administrator, at J.R.Mason@lboro.ac.uk
Please quote the reference RIMY121108 on any correspondence including the application form. The closing date for applications is Friday 21st November 2008.
