PhD researcher Immunopharmacology

PhD researcher Immunopharmacology (1.0 fte)
(Utrecht), 38 hours per week Utrecht University

Job description
PhD researcher Immunopharmacology
Excessive innate immune responses might be responsible for exacerbations of disturbed adaptive immunity associated with COPD and asthma. The targets in this PhD-project entitled “TLR–expression, stimulation and inhibition in asthma and COPD” are Toll like receptors, since they are the sentinels of the innate immune system. In these diseases impairment and polymorphisms of TLRs have been described abundantly. The main goal will be to unravel the importance of TLR in asthma and COPD. Translational medicine experiments will be performed in vivo and in vitro on immune cells in close collaboration with a Post Doc.:
optimizing different in vivo models for COPD and asthma
assessment of TLR expression in airways and inflammatory cells in health and disease
testing of pre- and probiotics and new chemical entities interfering with TLRs.
You will work as a team member of the TI Pharma project D1.101 Exploiting Toll like receptors for drug discovery. The project team comprises academic and industrial partners. In this case, the partners are: universities of Leiden, Utrecht, Maastricht and Nijmegen, the institute TNO and the biopharmaceutical companies Danone, Schering Plough and ISA Pharmaceuticals. You will attend a unique drug discovery education and training program offered by TI Pharma.

Requirements
University Graduate
We are looking for a candidate with
a master's degree (MSc) or an equivalent in Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences or Medical Sciences;
experience with cell culture, RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, FACS analysis and ELISA;
affinity with in vivo disease models;
permission to work with laboratory animals (Artikel 9 bevoegdheid; Wet op de Dierproeven), or the willingness to acquire the necessary qualification;
excellence in intellectual curiosity and a results- and performance-driven mind-set;
ambition and creativeness;
an interest in performing research in a unique multidisciplinary setting.

Additional information about the job:
Research at the Division of Pharmacology and Pathophysiology deals mainly with the immunopharmacology of the respiratory and gastrointestinal system. The objective of this program is to gain deeper insight into the ways in which cells and mediators of the immune system contribute to the malfunctioning of the respiratory and gastrointestinal system in animals and humans. A better understanding may lead to improvement of current therapy and to new therapy strategies. The program takes an integrative approach from ‘molecular’ to ‘in vivo ’research.

The division Pharmacology & Pathophysiology is participating in a TIPharm-funded platform “Exploiting Toll like receptors for drug discovery”. This TLR-platform joins top scientists and industry, working together on TLRs.
