Bio Informatics
Vacancy: Postdoc Bio-informatics We are a microbiology and infectious diseases group in The Netherlands, investigating microbial flora in health and disease in relation to prevention of bacterial infections. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow bioinformatics/-statistics who will help us to analyze complex metagenomic data in relation to epidemiological parameters. Besides the complex problem of interpreting phylogenetic data of microbiota, we find there are currently no generally accepted statistical methods available to analyze complex communities in relation to epidemiological determinants, especially not in multivariate ways. Our final goal is to model complex microbiota with the help of environmental and individual characteristics, with the ultimate goal to predict when disease will develop and to design preventive strategies. We are looking for someone with experience in the field of metagenomics, bio-informatics, or adjacent fields, who does not dislike statistics and epidemiology, is not afraid of developing new tools, is creative, efficient, independent, and likes to work in a multi-disciplinary team. The position is guaranteed for at least 3 years. The salary is depending on previous experience and according to the CAO for university medical centres (CAO-UMC: salary scale 10). PhD STUDENT Land-Atmosphere Interaction / Data assimilation
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH
For our Institute of Chemistry and Dynamics of the Geosphere - Agrosphere Department (ICG-4) - we are seeking a PhD Student in Land-Atmosphere Interaction / Data assimilation for a three-year PhD project.
Tasks:
Climate change and land use change will have a huge impact on the terrestrial water cycle. The terrestrial water cycle itself plays an important role in climate change, but in global and regional climate models it is often described in a greatly simplified manner. In the first task, the PhD student will use an improved model description of the terrestrial water cycle with a much higher spatial resolution (~50 m) as compared with current regional climate models (~2 km). The advantage of such an improved implementation will be tested for selected TERENO research sites, where a large volume of data is continuously monitored. In particular, soil moisture measurements from wireless sensor networks, remote sensing images and eddy covariance data will be used to compare model results and data. A second important task will address the combination of model and data using data assimilation methods in order to improve model predictions and model parameterizations. There will be a special focus on the use of eddy covariance data for improving model predictions and parameterizations. Computations will in part be carried out on the supercomputer infrastructure available at Forschungszentrum Jülich . The PhD project is embedded in the Helmholtz Climate Initiative REKLIM.
Requirements:
MSc degree (or equivalent) in atmospheric sciences, physics, physical geography, geo-ecology, civil, agricultural or environmental engineering with an overall grade of at least good. Knowledge in the fields of land-atmosphere interaction, hydrology, soil science, statistics, numerical simulation models and computer programming is of advantage. We offer the candidate excellent research conditions within an interdisciplinary team.

PhD Student Gravity wave ray tracing for climate prediction
PhD Student Gravity wave ray tracing for climate prediction
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH
For a research project at the Institute of Chemistry and Dynamics of the Geosphere (ICG-1) we are seeking a PhD Student in Gravity wave ray tracing for climate prediction for a three-year PhD project.
Background:
The dynamics of the middle atmosphere is largely governed by the momentum conveyed by atmospheric waves. Recently, interest has focused on atmospheric gravity waves since they are a major source of uncertainty in climate prediction. Gravity waves are too small in scale to be resolved in global climate models and their effects are therefore taken into account in global models by strongly simplified sub-models. For example, traditional gravity wave parameterization schemes assume gravity waves to propagate in the vertical only, but in reality gravity waves can traverse several 10 degrees of latitude. As part of a DFG PhD project, we aim to develop a novel, improved parameterization scheme avoiding the simplifications of traditional schemes.
The PhD project will be part of the EOS interdisciplinary network of the Helmholtz Association (http://www.netzwerk -eos.dlr. de/themes/ atmosphere_ ge.html) , offering regular summer schools and close cooperation with other PhD students working on related topics. Forschungszentrum Jülich also offers courses for PhD students to acquire complementary skills. The project will be performed in close international cooperation (including opportunities for research abroad) with other leading groups in the field, linked by the SPARC gravity wave initiative.
Tasks:
Based on the existing model code for gravity wave ray tracing (GROGRAT), a ray-tracing parameterization scheme will be developed. The code is to be implemented in a general circulation model (HAMMONIA). A launch distribution has to be determined which allows stable operation of the global model and which is, at the same time, consistent with global observations of gravity waves in the atmosphere. A link to a future ESA explorer mission will be established. The results will be published in the peer-reviewed literature.
Requirements:
A master’s degree or equivalent in science (physics, mathematics, meteorology) with a good final grade (in the German system 2.0 or better); sound programming skills (preferentially Unix/Linux operating systems); a well-developed ability to work in a team with international colleagues; ability to work independently. A sound understanding of the physics of atmospheric waves and skills in operating a global atmospheric model on a high-performance computer can be acquired in the course of the project.

Research Positions in Agricultural Innovation Processes and Policies
RIU is a research and development programme designed to put agricultural research into use for developmental purposes and to conduct research on how to do this. The programme is funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). It follows earlier investments by DFID in agricultural and natural resources research supported through its renewable natural resources research strategy (RRNRRS). While this strategy delivered high quality research the uptake of this research and its impact on social and economic progress was modest. Candidates should submit a CV and covering letter to Christine Wheeler (c.wheeler@nrint.co.uk) from whom further details are available on request. Project for a MSc/ MRes student on coral and anemone physiology at the Monaco Scientific Centre
at the Monaco Scientific Centre.
We are seeking a motivated graduate student to conduct a research
project on the influence of light on intracellular pH in symbiotic
cnidarian cells. The project fits into a wider programme of research
conducted at the Monaco Scientific Centre that concerns the
physiology of tropical and temperate corals in the context of global
environmental change, particularly ocean acidification. http://www.centrescientifique.mc/csmuk/presentation.php. The student
will be joint supervised by Dr Sylvie Tambutte (Team Leader of the
Physiology and Biochemistry Group) and Dr Alexander Venn.
The proposed project will provide the graduate student with the
opportunity to acquire skills in cell biology, with an emphasis on
the application of physiology to environmental issues. The applicant
will need to be already enrolled in a masters programme at another
institution, but the proposed project may fill part or all of a
student's requirement for research experience. The student will
preferably have some laboratory experience with a background in
physiology or cell and molecular biology. Duration of the project is
flexible with a maximum of 6 months, with a flexible start date from
January 2010. All bench fees/ laboratory costs are covered by CSM and
a bursary of 300 euros per month is available.
The Monaco Scientific Centre ("Centre Scientifique de Monaco" or
"CSM") is a world leader in coral physiology, particularly in the
areas of biomineralization and symbiosis. Although primarily a French
speaking laboratory, CSM provides an international research
environment, regularly hosting researchers from locations such the
US, Australia and Japan (thus English is widely spoken). CSM is
currently housed in the Monaco Oceanographic Museum and funded by the
Government of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.
Short project synopsis:
The cnidarian-dinoflagellate symbiosis underpins coral reef
ecosystems. The ecological importance of corals and their
vulnerability to environmental change has led to growing interest in
cnidarian physiology (see Weis and Allemand 2009 What determines
coral health? Science, 329, 1153-1155). We have recently developed an
approach to measure intracellular pH in corals and symbiotic
anemones, a fundamental parameter that influences most aspects of
cell physiology (Venn et al. 2009 Imaging intracellular pH in a reef
coral and symbiotic anemone. Proceedings of the National Academy of
Sciences of the USA. 106 (39) 16574-16579). The purpose of the
proposed project is to build on our preliminary data and investigate
how intracellular pH in host cnidarian cells is modified by the
photosynthesis of intracellular algae under different environmental
conditions. The project will use the symbiotic anemone Anemonia
viridis as a model.
The student may have the opportunity to apply for a fully funded
Ph.D. on this topic at CSM starting in October 2010.
Interested candidates should send a CV to Sylvie Tambutte stambutte@centrescientifique.mc and Alexander Vennalex@centrescientifique.mc
