PH.D. AND PRO­FES­SIO­NAL TRAI­NING
IN THE FIELD OF EU EX­TER­NAL AC­TION (2010-2013)
OF­FER FOR YOUNG RE­SE­AR­CHERS AND PRAC­TI­TIO­NERS

EX­ACT IS an EU wi­de Ph.D. and pro­fes­sio­nal trai­ning pro­gram­me on EU Ex­ter­nal Ac­tion for uni­ver­si­ty gra­dua­tes and re­se­ar­chers in an ear­ly sta­ge of their pro­fes­sio­nal and aca­de­mic ca­re­ers.

EX­ACT CON­SISTS of ni­ne part­ner in­sti­tu­ti­ons.

EX­ACT OF­FERS a uni­que syn­er­gy bet­ween:
in­ten­si­ve aca­de­mic trai­ning in the field of EU Ex­ter­nal Ac­tion, lea­ding to a `bi-​na­tio­nal' dou­ble Ph.D. ("co-​tu­tel­le") is­sued by two uni­ver­si­ties;
the op­por­tu­ni­ty to gain pro­fes­sio­nal ex­pe­ri­ence in two Eu­ro­pean Think Tanks dea­ling with EU for­eign po­li­cy, and
Ma­rie Cu­rie fun­ding on the ba­sis of a full em­ploy­ment con­tract2.
Ad­di­tio­nal­ly, par­ti­ci­pants will be­ne­fit from the de­sign of their own in­di­vi­du­al re­se­arch pro­jects, from sub­stan­ti­al pro­fes­sio­nal skills trai­ning and the broad EX­ACT net­work of con­ta­cts across aca­de­mia and the pri­va­te sec­tor, thus, im­pro­ving and in­cre­a­sing ca­re­er pro­s­pects in gro­wing and high­ly com­pe­ti­ti­ve Eu­ro­pean and na­tio­nal job mar­kets.

EX­ACT RE­CRUITS 12 par­ti­ci­pants of any na­tio­na­li­ty and age from dif­fe­rent re­le­vant di­sci­plines dea­ling with EU for­eign po­li­cy such as po­li­ti­cal sci­ence, law, and eco­no­mics who ha­ve ob­tai­ned their first de­gree en­t­it­ling her/him to em­bark on a doc­to­ra­te no ear­lier than May 2008 to be trai­ned from Oc­to­ber 2010 on­wards for a pe­riod of 3 years

EX­ACT FO­RE­SEES th­ree pha­ses of in-​depth aca­de­mic and pro­fes­sio­nal trai­ning:
PHA­SE I (Oct 2010 – Feb 2011), con­cen­tra­ting on aca­de­mic trai­ning ba­sed at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Co­lo­gne. It aims at im­par­ting ba­sic know­ledge about EU Ex­ter­nal Ac­tion and its in­sti­tu­tio­nal ar­chi­tec­ture. In­ter­di­sci­pli­na­ry ex­per­ti­se will be pro­vi­ded by four re­now­ned Vi­siting Sci­en­tists.
PHA­SE II (Mar 2011 – Mar 2012), fo­cu­sing on pro­fes­sio­nal skills. The par­ti­ci­pants will ta­ke up re­si­dence at two of the part­ner think tanks (one lo­ca­ted in Brus­sels). Pha­se II ser­ves as an op­por­tu­ni­ty to gain work ex­pe­ri­ence as well as to in­te­gra­te in pro­fes­sio­nal net­works. Op­por­tu­nities for fur­ther Ph.D. re­se­arch will be pro­vi­ded.
PHA­SE III (Apr 2012 – Sep 2013), of­fe­ring lo­cal Ph.D. trai­ning at one of the th­ree Uni­ver­si­ties in­vol­ved and pro­vi­ding the frame­work for fi­na­li­sing the in­di­vi­du­al re­se­arch pro­jects lea­ding to a bi-​na­tio­nal dou­ble Ph.D. de­gree ("co-​tu­tel­le").
