PhD Positions

1. ETH Zurich, Switzerland
PhD position in the modeling of step formation in steep streams at ETH Zurich, Switzerland
Closing date: June 1, 2012
Research is on the critical state at which steps are formed with the toolbox of self-organized criticality and cellular automaton modeling of step formation by grain blocking and hydraulically-driven step collapse in a 1-d and 2-d channel. Field work in Alptal is involved (in collaboration with WSL).
For more details contact: Dr Peter Molnar.

2. Grenoble, France
PhD, Discrete Element Modelling of Bedload Sediment Transport, Grenoble, France
Transport of bedload, the larger material that is transported in stream channels, has major consequences for public safety, for the management of water resources, and for environmental sustainability. Most particularly, in mountains, steep slopes drive intense transport of a wide range of grain sizes. As discussed recently (Frey and Church 2009)*, an important reason for our limited ability to predict sediment flux is that we have no general understanding of grain-grain interactions in stream channels,
especially due to a very wide range of grain size leading to grain size sorting or segregation (Fig.A). Movement of beads on a mobile bed in a turbulent supercritical flow on steep slopes has been studied at Cemagref in a two-dimensional channel. A high speed camera and image analysis allow us to measure variables at the particle scale such as positions, instantaneous velocities, trajectories, states of movements.
Two datasets are available, one relative to a uniform size of particle, the other pertaining to a segregating binary mixture (Fig.B).
This PhD subject is about discrete element modelling of bedload. In this type of modelling, each individual particle (sand grain, rock, …) is taken into account and intergranular interactions are modelled with simple laws (e.g. Coulomb friction). Gravity and contact forces permit to solve the dynamical behaviour of the system. The main issue will be to couple an existing discrete element model (yade-dem.org) with the fluid,
taking into account hydrodynamic forces. Calibration and validation will be performed with the help of both the uniform and binary datasets.
A. River armoring B. Segregation in a Flume
This PhD located in Grenoble, in the French Alps, will benefit from a collaboration with the laboratory 3SR, sols, solides, structures risques (discrete element modelling and fluid/grain coupling) and the laboratory LEGI, écoulements géophysiques et industriels (Turbulent flow modelling with particles).
Cemagref (Irstea), the National Institute in Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture, is a public research organisation depending on the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Research of the French Government. It employs over 1000 scientists and technicians specialising in interdisciplinary research in the field of environmental sciences, natural risks, rural life, agriculture, soil conservation, water
quality, vegetation and wildlife. The Grenoble centre is specialised in mountain-related issues. It conducts research in analysis and modelling of physical processes involved in the initiation and flowing of bedload transport, debris flows and snow avalanches, and their interactions with protective structures. 1. Activities of HIDA
----------------------------------------------------------
HIDA has taken over the training activities that AOTS has been implementing
as well as the experts dispatch program that JODC has been implementing,
and continues to carry out these projects with the aim of developing industries
and human resources within and outside Japan. Of these, the following provide
some details of the projects for Industrial Human Resource Development that are
eligible for official development assistance.

1) Training Activities
Training programs under HIDA comprises training that is carried out in Japan,
and training that is carried out in developing countries etc. Of
these, training that is
carried out in Japan involves the acceptance of company managers and engineers
from developing countries into Japanese companies that have financial
or business
relations with the company in the developing country. There are two
types of training-
“technical training” and “management training.” In the former, trainees acquire
specific skills in Japanese manufacturing technologies; in the latter,
trainees learn
the various management skills that are required for company and
factory management.

2) Experts Dispatch Program
The Experts Dispatch Program dispatches highly qualified specialists from Japan
to companies in developing countries, in cooperation with Japanese companies
that have financial or business relations with the company in the
developing country.
This program is effective in enhancing productivity and quality for the company
in the developing country, as well as in improving management systems.

3. New Global Cooperation (NGC) Seminar in July 2012
----------------------------------------------------------
Workshop for Challenging Managers (504-4)
-Five Days of Debating Bold Challenges in Simulation-

This program has been created to accommodate the needs of busy and active
business managers and leaders. It has spun off from the most popular HIDA
training program, The Training Course on Solving Human and Organizational
Problems (SHOP), which is held over 3 weeks. The Program Director of SHOP,
Mr. Noriyuki MURATA has developed this NGC 504-4 program by extracting
the "essence" of SHOP and spiced it up including methods of drama workshops.

----------------------------------------------------------
4. For the Popularization of Japanese Monozukuri-ABK & AOTS Alumni
Society (Thailand)-
----------------------------------------------------------
The Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology (TNI) located in Bangkok, Thailand, was
established in 2007 with the aim of nurturing engineers with a Japanese
monozukuri spirit. To that end, TNI not only reflects the needs of Japanese
companies in its curriculum, but also invites lecturers from Japanese companies
and organizes factory internships at Japanese companies.

It has also instituted a unique system whereby all students are
required to study
the Japanese language, thus producing many graduates who are “engineers
with Japanese language ability.” Consequently, a large number of the first batch
of students who graduated last year found jobs in Japanese companies.

In the process of the establishment of TNI, Technology Promotion Thailand (TPA)
played a significant role in reaching out to both the Japanese and
Thai governments and
industries, and in seeking the cooperation of Japanese companies in Thailand.
Thanks to their efforts, much cooperation and assistance was also proffered by
the Thai AOTS alumni group known as the ABK & AOTS Alumni Society (Thailand).
In fact, there are many people in the TPA who are also involved in the
Alumni Society.

TNI is a success story that is representative of how it can be possible to apply
the Japanese monozukuri concept to the development of human resources in
one’s own country. Never forget that its success is backed by the combined power
of all Thai ex-participants.

The respective AOTS alumni societies in each country are also putting
effort into
applying the skills and concepts that they have learnt in Japan, into
the development of
their home countries. Why not be a part of that too?
----------------------------------------------------------
5. Closure of AOTS Bangkok and New Delhi Offices
----------------------------------------------------------
AOTS Bangkok and New Delhi Offices closed on 31 March 2012.

15 PhD Positions at Univ. of Oldenburg, Germany

The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany, offers over the coming three years

15 Research Positions for PhD Candidates

within the E13 TV-L German public sector pay scale in the new Research Training Group (RTG)

SCARE— System Correctness under Adverse Conditions

funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG GRK 1765). These positions at the Department of Computing Science will be offered in three cohorts: five positions starting on 1 October 2012, five positions on 1 October 2013, and five positions on 1 October 2014. Each position is limited to three years.

The RTG SCARE addresses computerized systems that are placed in an environment with which they cooperate. System correctness means that the cooperation between environment and system satisfies desired behavioural properties. SCARE systematically investigates the problem of system correctness under adverse, only partially predictable conditions which can influence the behaviour of the system, the system context, and the assumptions made for verifying correctness. The RTG will consider three aspects of adverse conditions, both individually and in their combination:

A limited knowledge,
B unpredictable behaviour,
C changing system environment and system structure.

The main aim of SCARE is research into notions of system correctness that guarantee robustness of the system behaviour under such adverse conditions.

Supervision in the research training group is based on the four elements of "Levelling", helping doctoral candidates from diverse backgrounds to rapidly blend into the research environment, "Bonding", aiming at establishing a local and global research network, "Progress", which amounts to supervision and active support, and "Exchange", guaranteeing visibility in the scientific community. Together, these elements will support the doctoral candidates in becoming independent researchers who will be able to investigate complex problems autonomously and to effectively interact with the international research community.

Successful applicants for the research programme should have an excellent Master's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, fluency in English, and a strong interest in exploring new notions of system correctness in a cooperative research environment.

For the first SCARE cohort starting on 1 October 2012, we invite applications consisting of a CV, transcripts of the records summarizing the candidate's academic performance, a statement of interest in SCARE, and names of two references, to be sent in pdf format to

SCARE@uni-oldenburg.de by 30 June 2012.

One hardcopy should be sent to the Director of the RTG:
Prof. Dr. Ernst-R¨udiger Olderog,
Department of Computing Science, Faculty II, University of Oldenburg,
D-26111 Oldenburg, Germany

The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg seeks to increase the proportion of women in science.
Therefore, women are strongly encouraged to apply for the offered positions. According to §21, 3 NHG (the law governing universities in the German state of Lower Saxony) female applicants with equal qualification will be preferred. Disabled persons with equal qualification will be given preference.

The Centre offers a four year programme which combines a one year Master of Research (MRes) followed by a three year doctorate (PhD).

Why apply?

  • As one of our students you will join a vibrant and diverse community of academics and graduate students.
  • We aim to deliver a broadly based, multi-disciplinary and demanding PhD training programme which will prepare you for your future career.
  • On completion of the programme you will have expert knowledge in the area of energy research relevant to your research project; project and programme management skills; teamwork, communication and leadership skills and the ability to seek optimal solutions to complex or multifaceted problems.
  • You will receive an enhanced stipend of £17,090 per annum tax-free plus UK/EU fees for four years (conditions apply).

Who we are looking for
Applications are invited from UK graduates with a good first degree (1st or 2:1) in one of the following areas - physics, mathematics, engineering, chemistry, natural sciences, materials science or a related physical science. Eligible EU and overseas students with these or equivalent qualifications may also apply.

Studentship Details
The CDT is dedicated to addressing the challenge of climate change and this should be reflected in the project undertaken by the successful student. Projects on offer this year include:

  • Heat pumps and smart energy - a dynamic problem
This engineering/physics project will investigate the detailed interplay between heat delivery via heat pumps, thermal mass of living spaces, other thermal storage options and the need to minimise demands on the grid.
  • Multifunctional insulation materials
The majority of available insulation materials are selected only for their thermal performance. However, considerable cost reductions, energy savings and ease of operations may be achieved by the development of multifunctional insulation materials, selected for properties such as low toxicity, structural performance, ease of cutting to size, robustness for maintenance etc, in addition to thermal properties. This project will investigate the science and cost-effectiveness of multifunctional insulation materials.
  • What does all this data mean?
Suited to a student with strong mathematical background, this project will employ probabilistic techniques to investigate the evidence for trends in energy consumption, and relation to physical effects.
  • Development of practical tests for estimating heat losses from heat distribution systems in buildings in the field
Changes in building regulations over the last decade have meant that the annual demand for space heating is now less than that for water heating in typical new dwellings. This means that a significant proportion of heat losses associated with provision of hot water can no longer be assumed to be useful and may contribute to overheating of living spaces in Summer. In the same way that the co-heating test has been developed to enable the quanitification of fabric heat loss, there is a need for a series of tests to characterise heat losses from heat distribution and storage systems in buildings. The aim of this project is to develop, demonstrate and evaluate such tests for a variety of building types.

The above projects may evolve over the course of the MRes year, in the light of new developments. We will also consider student proposals.
