The Research Institute for History at Leiden University is seeking to appoint

The Research Institute for History, which is part of the Arts Faculty of Leiden University, is seeking to appoint three research students and one postdoctoral researcher, starting from 1 September 2008.
The three research students and the postdoc will join the research team of the NWO VICI-project:
‘Tales of the Revolt. Memory, oblivion and identity in the Low Countries (1566-1700)’ http://www.talesoftherevolt.leidenuniv.nl, led by Prof. Judith Pollmann. The project starts on 1 September 2008.
The research students will be appointed for four days a week for a period of five years. The postdoc will be appointed for four days a week for four years.
We invite applications for three research studentships for the following subprojects:
' The politics of memory in the Low Countries, 1566-1700'
'Relics, martyrs, miracles. Memory and religious identity in the Low Countries, 1566-1700'
'Exile memories and the reinvention of the Netherlands, 1566-1700'
These subprojects will lead to the completion of a doctorate in history from Leiden University.
Successful applicants have:
An MA degree, or equivalent, in history, with a specialization in the history of the early modern Low Countries. Those who hold a degree in early modern literature, religious history or another area of Netherlands cultural history may also apply, if their research experience is demonstrably relevant to this project;
Demonstrable experience in the study of the themes and/or source types that are used in the project will be considered an advantage; Excellent reading skills in early modern and modern academic Dutch, as well as a command of English, French and at least one other modern language. Some knowledge of Latin is an advantage. Non-native speakers are expected to acquire an active command of Dutch within the first year of their appointment. Successful applicants will be appointed for 30.4 hours per week, at first for one year. If the performance in that year is satisfactory, the appointment will be renewed for four years. Remuneration will be € 2,000 gross per calendar month in the first year, increasing to a maximum of € 2,558 gross per calendar month in the fourth and fifth years, pro rata (this is in accordance with current pay scales as indicated in the ‘CAO voor Nederlandse Universiteiten’, see

‘The practice of memory. Narrating the Revolt, 1455-1700.’
The successful applicant
Holds a doctorate in history, with a specialization in the history of the early modern Low Countries. Those who hold a doctoral degree in early modern literature or another relevant area of Netherlands cultural history, and whose research experience is demonstrably relevant to this project, are also invited to apply; Has demonstrable affinity with the research theme of the project and/or experience in the study of early modern private writing;
Has excellent communication skills;
Has an excellent active command of English, excellent reading knowledge of early modern and modern Dutch and French, and command of at least one other modern language. Knowledge of Latin is an advantage. Non-native speakers are expected to acquire an active command of Dutch within the first year of their appointment. The successful applicant will be appointed for 30.4 hours per week, at first for one year. If the performance in that year is satisfactory, the appointment will be renewed for a period of three years. The remuneration will depend on previous experience and will range from a minimum of €3,129 to a maximum of €3,687 per calendar month, before tax, pro rata (in accordance with the ‘CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten:
