PRINCE OF WALES INNOVATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Outstanding Opportunities for Outstanding Graduates

20 PhD Scholarships - £20,000 annual stipend

The University of Wales is inviting expressions of interest from outstanding graduates for its first cohort of Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarships (POWIS).

POWIS is a new £11 million initiative that is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund provided through the Welsh Assembly Government. In 2009, POWIS will fund a minimum of 20 scholarships to undertake PhD research on a full-time basis over a three year period.

The successful candidates will undertake research projects developed by high growth, innovative companies in Wales and supervised by academics from partner universities. This is therefore an opportunity for students with an excellent academic background to gain experience of developing R&D within high growth technology-based firms, whilst improving their entrepreneurship and innovation skills.

Expressions of interest are sought from graduates with a background in one or more of following areas:

Advanced engineering and manufacturing
Digital economy
Health and bio-sciences
Innovation management
Information systems and business management
Sustainable technologies

The Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarship programme is open to all students, whether from the UK, EU or worldwide. Scholarships cover all tuition fees and an annual stipend of £20,000 plus a one off research grant of £5,000. Innovation scholars will also follow a programme of personal, cultural, and professional development including residential courses and summer schools.

To be considered for a scholarship, you must have a strong academic background and evidence of outstanding achievement at first degree, with a masters degree and relevant industry experience preferable. Ability to communicate effectively in English is essential.

The University of Wales wishes to significantly increase the number of women studying PhDs in Wales and strongly encourages applications from suitably qualified women for these scholarships.

To express your interest in learning more about the opportunities available in your field, email powis@wales.ac.uk for an application form.

Deadline for expressions of interest is Monday 14th September 2009 12:00 GMT
