PhD/Postdoc Climate Change
Wageningen University and Researchcentre Earth System Science and Climate Change Group
(Gelderland), 38 hours per week
Job description
1. Regional Hydro-meteorologist
The EU Sixth Framework Programme has financed an Integrated Project "Water and Global Change (WATCH)". Within this project the candidate will be responsible for analysing and quantifying feedbacks between land use (mainly irrigation), climate and the hydrological cycle. In addition the project will focus on the impacts of climate change on water available for irrigation. Feedbacks and impacts will be studied using atmospheric analyses potentially sensitive areas to feedback under the historic climate and through the development of 3D coupled models.
2. Analyses of European water scenarios for their impact on the agricultural sector
The EU Project "Water Scenarios for Europe and for Neighbouring States" (SCENES), will specify a set of multi-scale European water scenarios. Within this project the successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing the impacts of climate and socio-economic changes on water quality and quantity; and how these changes affect water availability for food production. The research will involve the use of different agricultural and/or hydrological models and the selection of suitable criteria and indicators. The successful candidate will work in close
collaboration with partners from other European university involved in the SCENES project.
For both positions there is the possibility to spend time at partner institutes in the US.

Wageningen University and Researchcentre Earth System Science and Climate Change Group
The overall mission of the Earth Systems Science and Climate Change group is to advance our understanding of the Earth and Climate System as a complex system, characterized by intricately linked processes, feedbacks and tele-connections, and with specific inclusion of the anthropogenic and human components. Our research focuses on four themes:
* Climate change impacts and adaptation
* Land Atmosphere Interactions
* Human dimension on global change and water resource management
* Scaling issues - for global to regional to local
We develop innovative methods and tools (both observational and modelling ones), with a common aim to advance scientific understanding, as well as to support policies and strategic decision making processes in the field of climate, water and the environment. The Earth Systems Science and Climate Change Our group is rapidly growing and recently we have obtained funding for a range of projects focussing on the impacts of global change on water resources. There will be a number of post-docs and Ph.D. students working on these projects and the successful candidates are expected to collaborate with other researchers working on these similar issues.
