of the interdisciplinary programme of the new Max Planck Research School on Retaliation, Mediation, Punishment (IMPRS-REMEP).
The research agenda has its focus on
fundamental questions as to how social order and social control is negotiated,

significance in the context of conflict and post-conflict societies, where
traditional approaches to mediation and reconciliation are being adopted in the
search for modern strategies of conflict resolution, amending or - partially -
replacing, well-established systems of punishment mainly based on concepts of
retaliation.
The integrated curriculum of the Research School offers structured,
interdisciplinary training. While working on their own projects, the young
researchers have the opportunity to become acquainted with the theoretical
approaches and empirical instruments of all disciplines involved.
The working language is English.

Requirements

The
research school aims to attract young researchers educated in law (in
articular, criminal law), criminology or sociology.

Application requirements:
1. Completion of a law degree at a
German university or completion at an equivalent university abroad. First or

REMEP.
4. Solid proficiency in the English
language. In addition, students should have at least some basic knowledge of
German language and demonstrate willingness to improve it.
The IMPRS REMEP seeks to reach a
composition of at least 50 percent foreign doctoral students. Thus, foreign
candidates with a foreign degree are explicitly encouraged to apply.
Recognition of equivalence of foreign degrees is to be determined by the
doctoral committee of the Faculty of Law or by the examination committee of the
Joint Commission of the Faculties of Humanities and Philology of the University
of Freiburg, in accordance with the criteria laid out by the Central Office for
Foreign Education at the Secretariat of the Standing Conference of the
Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs ("Zentralstelle für
ausländisches Bildungswesen im Sekretariat der Ständigen Konferenz der
Kultusminister der Länder").

Research fellowships (Digital Ecosystems, Cultural Enterprise)

Curtin University is now calling for applications for 2009's postdoctoral and senior research fellowships. These are highly competitive and prestigious awards with 4-year terms. 13 in total are available across the whole university. Because of Curtin's current desire to concentrate research into a small number of key areas, preference (strong preference I am told) will be given to applications in designated areas.

Two designated specialisations apply particularly to Internet research and would enable a successful applicant to join the Department of Internet Studies. These specialisations are digital ecosystems and cultural enterprise. They are vague enough, I suspect, to enable many different research projects to be successfully proposed, but do require a degree of concentration of networked information technologies, and on the production/understanding of cultural forms and businesses.

All the information is at:
http://research.curtin.edu.au/grants/fellowships.cfm
The closing date is 31 October.

IF you want to join the Internet Studies Department, then your key reference is the Head of School, Media, Culture and Creative Arts (within which net studies fits) A/Prof Steve Mickler. However, please cc me into any correspondence to him so I can keep abreast of potential applications. I would be delighted to provide advice as well, prior to any formal contact. (Note - I am not contactable between 5 and 24 September).

Open PhD positions at IMT Lucca, Italy

Call for applications: PhD Programs 2008

Doctoral Programs

Competitions for admission are open in the following PhD Programs at IMT: Computer Science and Engineering Theories developed within computer science have been, and still are, remarkably relevant not only for developing devices and tools which are commonly used in today society, but also for facing new theoretical problems of wide perspective.

In particular, the study of models, algorithms and verification methods of distributed systems with shared resources, with attention to the problems of security, concurrency, real time, "open endness", distributed decisions, etc. has fostered the development of the informatics of the new wide area networks. Students acquire extensive knowledge of the fundamentals and applications of architectures and languages for global and grid computing, web systems and services, in particular for business applications, embedded systems, web data mining, wired and wireless networks, and mobile systems. In addition to offering broad scope for basic research, these domains define a professional area where all the needs of computer applications on wide are networks can find their fulfilment.

Economics, Markets, Institutions With its interdisciplinary (theoretical, quantitative and institutional) approach, the program aims at dealing with issues in political economy, applied public economics, and the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomic impact on the functioning of markets, as well as on productivity and growth.

A distinctive character of the PhD program is the strong integration of theoretical, technical and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy.

Theoretical methodologies and models will therefore tested through the methodical/systematic investigation of actual cases. At the end of the program, students will be able to catch commonalities as well as distinctive characters of the several markets, in reference to economic laws, market regulations, contractual, managing and organizational solutions.

Political Systems and Institutional Change The PhD Program aims to make students familiar with analytical tools and methodologies of investigation elaborated within different contemporary traditions in social sciences, thereby providing the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to both evaluate comparatively the performance of institutional systems, and elaborate proposals for structural reforms. The courses will especially focus on the historical, political, institutional and economic dynamics that have been characterising the development of European and ex Soviet countries after the Second Word War. They will then consider among other topics: the institutional and decisional dynamics of European countries and the European Union including the trends towards multilevel governance both at the European and at the domestic level (federalisation, independent regulatory authorities, etc.); transatlantic relations EU-US; relations between politics, social processes and political economy decisions; paths of economic and political development; the institutional workings of international organisations; the characters of some geographical areas of special relevance.

Duration: 3 years

Language: Courses and seminars are held in English. Foreign PhD students are required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.

Classes begin in March 2009.
Deadline
The deadline for applications is December 5, 2008 at 6:00pm (Italian time).

PhD & Postdoc opportunities -- The Infonomics and New Media Research Centre at

The Infonomics and New Media Research Centre at Zuyd University has

vacancies for

2 PhD students / junior researchers (5 yrs, full time)
and
1 Postdoc / senior researcher (5 yrs, full time)

Closing date 15th September – interviews are planned in week 39. All positions are part of an exciting and prestigious 5-year project, generously funded by the European Research Council as part of the 7th Framework Ideas Programme, called : DigIDeas: Social and Ethical Aspects of Digital Identities. Towards a Value Sensitive Identity Management.

The overall aims of this project are to increase understanding and awareness of the social and ethical aspects of digital identity management (IDM), and to contribute to the quality and social and ethical acceptability of technological developments. The project will achieve these goals by bringing recent insights gained from several disciplines - social studies of science and technology, surveillance studies, philosophy (social philosophy and philosophy of technology) and computer ethics - to bear on actual developments in digital identity management, thus exploring novel ways to identify and articulate the issues concerned. With a series of interdisciplinary studies focussing on different application areas of IDM, we intend to produce more fine-grained knowledge of the ways IDM is implicated in contemporary transformations of identity. The programme will involve three complementary PhD projects, and one integrative postdoc project, thus achieving a strong concentration of groundbreaking knowledge on a set of fast emerging intellectual and societal problems. All project members will have clearly defined individual research projects, as well as cooperate as team members and contribute to DigIDeas’ overall project goals. PhD position at TU Eindhoven Department of Architecture, BUilding and Planning

PhD Design and decision support systems - modelling of supernetworks
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven Department of Architecture, Building and Planning
Eindhoven, (Noord-Brabant), 40 hours per week

Job description

Project description
Start and end date Project: start date: ASAP (depending only on the availability of a suitably qualified PhD-candidate). We aim at a starting date of January 1st 2009, and an ending date four years later.

Research objective
The aim of the proposed project is to develop supernetwork models at the highest level of integration to analyze design solutions for physical and non-physical networks in a more integrated fashion than has been done hitherto. The use of supernetwork models to analyze and evaluate synergies in the context of an accessibility analysis and based on actual path choice behaviour raises new questions. This new application and behavioural extension of the concept implies a methodological contribution to supernetwork modelling with relevance for urban planning, transportation research and spatial analysis. The methodology developed in this project will be implemented in a GIS-based software tool that can be used to evaluate design solutions and scenarios for developments in the Randstad region.

Research approach
The research is focused on development of a model for constructing supernetworks and computing paths through these networks for implementing given activity agenda’s of individuals. Since the structure and parameters of a supernetwork are dependent on an activity agenda and also on perceptions, knowledge, preferences and opportunities/constraints (e.g., teleworking) of a specific individual, the model is designed to generate supernetworks dynamically based on physical data as well as data regarding a specific individual and agenda. To develop the model, the following research questions are addressed:

- How can utilities of activities, and travelling and transactions costs be modelled as generalized link costs functions representing also preferences, perceptions and constraints of an individual?

In the use phase, the envisioned model should take into account the actual path choice behaviour and benefits that multiple individuals possibly can realize from synchronization of their paths in time and space through their personalized supernetworks. A next key element of the model developed in this research, therefore, concern:

- A (dynamic) path choice model that represents activity-scheduling and re-scheduling behaviour of individuals when faced with unforeseen events (e.g., delays);
- A path synchronization model representing communications and joint decision making between individuals to realize planned interactions (e.g., joint activity participation).

In technical terms, this means that existing shortest-path algorithms are replaced by models that better represent limited information, cognitive constraints and possibly myopic behaviour of subjects. The model is developed based on stated and revealed data on path choice.
