Portugal. 5 years PhD researcher position is currently open by The Centre of Geographical Studies. Expected candidates are those with a PhD on the scientific domains of Physical Geography and other Earth and Atmosphere Sciences, Human Geography and other Social Sciences, Planning and Territorial Management and Geographical Information Systems.
The applicants should have a minimum of postdoctoral three years experience (in exceptional cases, candidates with less than three years research experience might be considered eligible) - and demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies to integrate the scientific research on ongoing and future R&D projects within the above mentioned Research Groups of the CEG (see Fellowship Summary). The successful applicants will be integrated on projects and work programmes of these Research Groups of the CEG (www.ceg.ul.pt)
The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicants and submit to the FCT a list of candidates eligible for contract, according to the merit of the candidature. Later, and according to the Selection Committee decision, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) will specify the areas of recruitment and the researchers to contract.
All applications will be evaluated by an international Selection Committee composed by 5 PhD experts in Human and Physical Geography and Geographical Information Systems, as follows: 2 Full professors of the Centre of Geographical Studies and 3 International Full Professors or Researchers.
The Selection Committee will evaluate the following items of the application:
* PhD scientific area and thesis relevance for the research activity to be developed in the Research Groups of the CEG;
* Academic curriculum;
* Postdoctoral scientific and professional Curriculum;
* Quality and pertinence of a personal research proposal presented by the applicant, as well as, its adequacy to the objectives of and the integration in the Research Groups of the CEG (max. 5 pages);
* Motivation of the applicant.
The selection will be based on a two-step evaluation. The first step involves the administrative verification of the admissibility of the applicant and the second step is the candidature evaluation, during which selected candidates might be invited for an interview.
In addition to the development of the applicant’s research proposal, the candidate should also collaborate in the activities of the Research Group which include:
1. Literature review;
2. Data gathering and fieldwork;
3. Data analysis;
4. Organisation of workshops and conferences;
5. Dissemination of results in conferences and publications;
6. Collaboration on the preparation of new research proposals.

i) a letter stating the applicant’s interest, motivation and qualifications, as well as explaining how his/her profile is an asset for the Research Group for which the candidate applies to;
ii) copies of degree certificates;
iii) Curriculum Vitae with a list of publications;
iv) copy of an identification document (ID card, passport or other);
v) a minimum of two letters of recommendation or two contacts of persons that can recommend the candidate;
vi) Plan of a personal research project to be developed within the
Research Group of the CEG (max. 5 pages). The specification of the
Research Group the candidate is applying to is mandatory.
