Job description
The Amsterdam School for Social Science Research (ASSR) is engaged in empirical social-scientific research (anthropology, sociology, and political science) on the formation and functioning of contemporary societies from a historical and comparative perspective.
Tasks:
Participation in the ASSR course programme, weekly staff seminars and PhD dissertation clubs. The PhD thesis should be finalized within four years. In this period, the candidate will also be expected to teach for at least 10% of the time.
Requirements
Required education/skills:Candidates must have completed their Master's degree in one of the social sciences. They will be assessed on the basis of their research proposal (scientific merit, method, originality, feasibility) and its relevance to the ASSR research clusters, namely Health, Care and the Body; Institutions, Inequalities and Internationalization; Mobility, Culture and Social Inequality; Religion, Politics and Identity; Rethinking Politics (see www.assr.nl for the complete description), their research potential and their resume.

Conditions of employment
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period Duration of the contract: for a period of four years Maximum hours per week: 38
Additional conditions of employment:
The PhD students will be appointed through UvA Jobservice for a period of four years. The appointments will start in September 2008. Evaluations will be held after 8, 19, 31 and 40 months. The salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €1,956 (first year) up to a maximum of €2,502 (final year) gross per month for a 38-hour week.
