Heart disease and stroke account for nearly half of all deaths in the UK.CORDA - funds specialist, high quality research into the prevention of heartdisease and stroke using early, non-invasive diagnosis and treatment. Inhonour of the pioneering effort by Professor Donald Longmore inCardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging, a CORDA Donald Longmore PhDfellowship has been created by CORDA in 2007 for research into advancedimage analysis and computing techniques in CMR.
The position is open every three years and available to outstanding youngscientists of all nationalities. The PhD research will be hosted by theInstitute of Biomedical Engineering, Imperial College London and the CMRUnit, Royal Brompton Hospital. The first CORDA Donald Longmore Fellow isexpected to start in April 2008.
The research area of the first CORDA Donald Longmore PhD fellow will befocussed on medical image computing and modelling techniques for myocardialregeneration and myocardial perfusion. It involves targeted assessment ofcardiovascular structure and function and multi-modality imageregistration/fusion for serial image assessment and prognostic evaluation oftherapeutic measures. The candidate will require an outstanding first or MScdegree (or equivalent) with a strong background in computing, imageprocessing, and biomedical engineering.
