PhD Scholarship in Ocean Engineering Development of a Global Ocean Databasefrom Satellite Altimeters
*Victoria, Australia*
*BACKGROUND:
*Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) is seeking a suitably qualifiedstudent to undertake post-graduate study to develop an altimeter databasefor ocean waves and apply it to investigation of extreme wave events.
*About Swinburne University of Technology
*Swinburne University of Technology is a large multi-sectoral andmulti-campus institution with a stated mission to be a pre-eminententrepreneurial university from the Asia-Pacific, thriving on new ideas andknowledge and exploiting its intersectoral heritage to create value for itsstakeholders. The Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences is host to most of theengineering activities at Swinburne as well as key programs in aviation andphotonics. The Coastal Engineering and Physical Oceanography group of theFaculty specialises in research of deep-water and finite-depth wavedynamics, spectral modelling of wind-generated waves, wave breaking anddissipation, air-sea interaction, wave-bottom interaction and turbulence.
*PROJECT ABSTRACT:
*Over the past 20 years satellite-based radar altimeters have mademeasurements of ocean wave conditions. During this period of time a total of7 different altimeter missions have been flown. The combined databaserepresents the most comprehensive dataset ever developed of global waveconditions. This project involves developing a combined database from theseseparate missions and then applying this to the determination of extremewave conditions at any location on the global oceans. The resulting databasehas the potential to drastically change the way in which ocean wave designis undertaken.
